You can do anything, people are conducting experiments on the bio reef, BUT it's better to stick to traditional solutions.

It is easy to integrate a sump on the side of such an aquarium, and in fact, I recently saw a 500-liter aquarium without a sump and filter, just with a protein skimmer.
Amanda
It is possible, but the skimmer will be external rather than hanging; I haven't seen hanging ones for such a volume, usually hanging ones are used for smaller tanks. You will also definitely need nitrate and phosphate reducers, a calcium reactor or balling method. All of this needs to be placed somewhere, so it's better to look for space. In a marine aquarium, there is much more maintenance equipment than in a freshwater aquarium.

I have a soft M.aquarium with three fish, 400 liters without a sump and skimmer, which has been running for three years. However, there is a catch. The main thing is to place good live rocks, live sand. Do not overload with fish and other creatures, especially fish. Have enough macrophytes.
Daniel4967
Do you mean next to or inside? Which specific skimmer?
Darrell7542
I am familiar with your system, but unfortunately only remotely. I would really like to see it in person.
Robert5335
Inside, or nearby if space allows.
Talk to user 1982, their external skimmer is just nearby.
Caitlin3279
skimm 800, but I feel like I need to get a more powerful one, as I have quite a bit of fish, soft corals, and LPS. The photo of the aquarium is in the album, but the encrusting coral is not visible there.

Water changes of 20-30% per month, and minimal fish, may be possible.
Jesse
100-150 liters per month - a bit expensive.
Jerry
The entire invoice is about 150 liters, which is approximately 4 kg of salt costing around $30, totaling $360 for the year, and there you have it.
Jamie3553
I noticed, but I'm holding on for now. The matter is just too enticing.
Cynthia6578
So I don't refuse the skimmer. I just have nowhere to put the sump, so I'm asking for advice on a hang-on skimmer or a way to fit it inside the aquarium.
Kimberly2102
I think mangrove trees wouldn't hurt you and would actually look beautiful in such a low aquarium... Plus, they would be beneficial for the water.
Amanda5586
You can try to make an irrigated filter as described here: But I don't know how it works, or if it works at all...)))))
Brianna
I saw this system "live." I was visiting Sasha. I might implement it over time, but for now, I want to stick to the "classic scheme."
Aaron
I decided to partition part of the aquarium for a sump. The length allows for it – 2.38 m. Who can tell me how much to "measure out" for the sump? I ordered the Reef Oktopus DNW-110-6520 skimmer. Will it fit?
Todd8452
If there is a normal stone in the aquarium in sufficient quantity, then the compartment can be made according to the size of the skimmer and all the electrical equipment, and that's it. But then, ideally, you will have to plant algae in the display.
As for the dimensions, it's unlikely anyone will tell you for sure. Take a ruler, measure, and create.
Bonnie
Thank you very much for your comment. I was just starting to come up with a similar scheme, but the details were vague. You have brought complete clarity. I will do just that! And also, I will take the "aquarium" home. No more casting pearls before...
David4968
I would set aside about 100 liters for the filter; if the bioload is high, you'll need a decent-sized skimmer, and you'll also need quite a bit of space for live rock or ceramic media. Overall, I like this setup; all the water is in one volume, with no overflows, drains, or other risks.
Cynthia
I don't plan on a large bioload, 3-5 fish and soft corals. I bought a Reef Oktopus DNW-110-6520 skimmer.
Elijah7048
I believe that you rushed into buying the skimmer; I would have opted for one that can handle at least 2 volumes of water, if not 3. A large skimmer is 90% of the success, and everything else is just support for it.
