You cannot pour water from the tap.
Amanda
It was meant to be a water supply system, as installing osmosis is ineffective. And what can be done in this situation?
Reginald5073
I'm talking about this. You can buy a distillation apparatus and distill water on the stove. Or buy it at the pharmacy.
Jamie3553
Distillate can be poured. Tap water cannot. In Moscow, there is bottled water "Shishkin Les" - demineralized - it can be poured, but it's unlikely we have such water. At companies that deliver drinking water, you can order demineralized, reverse osmosis water - they will bring as much as needed.
Mariah
This is basically what I wanted to hear. As I understand it, you can put a carbon cartridge in a household filter, pour water through it into a canister, salt it, throw a carbon filter into the canister, and run the water through the carbon for a day. I bought JBL's Dinitrol - how justified is its use in the sea? In a freshwater aquarium, besides mineral supplements for plants, I try not to use chemicals.
Melinda2740
There is no need to run water through the coal after salting; it is sufficient for it to be poured through the carbon cartridge. I don't know what JBL's dinitrol is, as I have never used it.
Joseph2576
In general, have your tap water tested and see what you have there... They say you can request an accurate analysis from a laboratory. I don't know, I haven't checked...
Caroline1599
You are right, if the nitrate content is less than 5 mg per liter, it can be used; the same goes for phosphorus, which should be less than 0.1 mg per liter. As for ammonium and nitrite, I think you can figure it out yourself.
Gregory
You can also pay attention to Iron... And everything else, I think, won't be "off the charts" in tap water.
Joseph8592
Today I salted the tap water that was passed through charcoal, tomorrow I will do tests for nitrates. There is also a test for ammonium, but I wanted to do it after adding live rocks. Should I do it right away?
We have a district center, and I will never trust the information from our water supply about water quality. But the discus fish have been living in our water for the fourth month and are doing well. I haven't lost a single one; they are growing, and their coloration is starting to show. I change 30% of the water once a week, letting it sit for 20 minutes.
Timothy
This test needs to be done on both tap water and water that has passed through your filter. There is no need to test for ammonium right now.
Megan
I wanted to add: there are tests for seawater, and there are tests for freshwater.
Vanessa6144
I use "Morshynska" for substitutions, with a mineralization of 0.1-0.3 (if I remember correctly, Gh-6, Kh-3). The question is, I don't know if there are silicates in it. Maybe someone has a test? And wouldn't mind buying half a liter in the store and measuring it? For example, "Znamenovskaya" has silicates listed on the label and they are off the charts, but here there is nothing. As I understand, they might remain after the chemical clarification of the water?
Linda
I bought Aquarium Systems test for saltwater. Nitrates in tap water were not detected after salting. We have Morshynska in our city, but it's a bit too expensive for me; I still want to try using tap water that has been filtered through a carbon filter. In the coming days, I will be adding live rocks and we'll see how suitable the tap water is.
Todd
What kind of salt do you use? There seems to be one with a so-called buffer and one without. At first, I used more mineralized water, which resulted in a fairly high KH. I couldn't find a definitive opinion on this, so I switched to Morshynska, even though it's more expensive.
Whitney
salt Instand Ocean, I got it from A. There is a knowledgeable manager who explains everything clearly. If I don't know something, I ask him questions, and he patiently clarifies.
Brandon9634
What is the Kh?
Sheila1322
Kh was not measured because there is no test. Is this very important?
Brandi
I haven't measured it either - there's no test...
Elizabeth882
I don't really know myself. Maybe Platax will explain it in a popular way? I just understood that a high value can be harmful to some corals.
Anthony4281
Yes, carbonate hardness is one of the parameters that needs to be monitored constantly. The optimal values are 7-10 German degrees or 2.5-3 mg-eq/L.

There is an aquarium on the tap water. Five days ago, I bought a coral clavularia and a fish called "National." Igor has a feather worm in Bereznyaki, not expensive. Everything is still alive for now. The coral opened up almost completely the next morning, about 90-95%. The fish hid for the first few days, but now it slowly swims out from behind the rocks. I will definitely get an osmosis system; it's not that expensive compared to the cost of corals, rocks, etc.
PS Today the osmosis system is already on its way, it should be delivered in the evening, Polish, without a pump for 120 USD, with a pump for 160 USD. I will write in detail about what arrived when it gets here.
Alyssa6727
The osmosis system is installed, the setup is great, and there’s even a small tap for water. I only needed 4 screws to attach the filter system under the sink and tape for sealing the connection to the water supply. The water from the tap is enriched with salts, so it’s drinkable, but it won’t work for the aquarium. I’ll need to screw in something like a tee with a tap before the salt filter, but the tubes are very thin, just a bit thicker than a dropper, and they’re not available in hardware stores. Everything fits under the sink, which I’m very pleased with.
Gregory
After installing the osmosis system, I thought questions about water would disappear, but now there's a question about water quality. This link mentioned that the coral Xenia removes nitrates from the water. Is this another fabrication? Or what?
Elizabeth1221
Usually, a carbon post-filter is installed in a standard osmosis system instead of a salt filter, and as far as I understand, in this case, it is possible to pour water directly from the tap into the aquarium and drink it myself?
Katie3017
From that tap flows all the crap contained in the water, plus it's concentrated. That is, if the tap has 40 mg/l of nitrates, it will already be 50-60 mg/l there, and the same goes for all heavy metals. You can water flowers with it, and you can even sell it to harmful neighbors instead of mineral water. Once, I set it up in a paludarium, thinking "why let the good go to waste," and by the second day, the leaves were covered in reddish spots.
David7773
I meant from the drinking faucet.
Russell8484
Yes, I read word by word.
Timothy
For a month, I took water measurements using the Tetra test. I recently acquired a JBL laboratory. I'm interested in hearing the opinions of aquarists. So far, I've only compared NO3.
Tetra
Tap water: 10
Reverse osmosis Zepter: 5
Aquarium: 25
JBL
Tap water: 5
Reverse osmosis Zepter: 0
Aquarium: 5
Julia
Tetra, as a test manufacturer, has long lost its reputation in my eyes. In other words, it's a "no-name" company, just like "Sera." JBL, Red Sea, Aquarium System, or even better, Salifert!
Christina9947
I also have JBL for nitrate. In my opinion, at low concentrations it is still more accurate than Tetra. Moreover, they say that Tetra only shows a change, and you can't determine the exact value on the scale.
Rachael
I want to point out that the price of Tetra components is not small.
Crystal4879
The tetra has a very large margin of error, and the tests are inconvenient; sometimes you can't even determine the parameter by color. As for the cost... I'll give an example with magnesium - I bought JBL Magnesium for 50, the concentration is enough for my entire aquarium, but it will still be a bit lacking, and I bought Aquamedic Magnesium from Arowana for 150, which will last at least six months - 5ml a week, in a 1500ml bottle.
Monica
it unfortunately guarantees nothing.
Jacob7201
I have Tetra tests for nitrate, nitrite, and hardness (dH). There are also the same tests from JBL. The results from Tetra are always inflated, and the scale is poor with rough transitions... But!!! You can get a general idea of the aquarium's condition!
Nicholas
I will check the ammonium and nitrite and report back!
Vanessa6144
What to throw in the trash??
Loretta5483
What do you think?
Jasmine
Hello!
Actually, the Tetra test has long been known for giving inflated nitrate readings, but the results are still strange.
It shows 0 from the tap water, 0 after osmosis, and even in the aquarium, if there is any coloration, it's minimal...
Another test, Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, shows a complete zero in all similar measurements.
