Yeah, that's harsh. I also made a small external one once and was afraid to leave it overnight, just in case the power went out or something else happened, so I keep using the internal ones, and I took that one apart.
Marie5735
It was right to be afraid. It was right to analyze.
Tonya
which brand of canister filter, model?
Sharon
Is the canister an external one? A hole is drilled in the intake pipe 2 cm below the water level, and that's it. Nothing will drain below this hole.
Martha
Such passions have been talked about, it's terrifying!
Katie5500
In my sea, the JBL E900 external device worked for a year and a half. I had no problems with it! Maybe a lot really depends on the manufacturer.
Mitchell7972
This hole thing is nonsense - there are many aquariums with bottom plumbing, you just need to keep an eye on the taps and rubber seals (replace them once a year), not when neighbors from below come to visit. During maintenance, turn off the filter and after work, when turning it back on, carefully check the sealing at the joints.
Mike
You probably have a lot of experience in aquarium maintenance, so I want to share a little secret with you: strangely enough, most issues occur during the deep night when everyone is asleep, and often people perform maintenance by turning off the power for an hour or two, or there are just failures in the system. You can check and adjust things before leaving, and then after 6-7 hours, surprise!
But that's not the main point; it's just an attempt to convey that external filters are not needed for marine aquariums and can be dangerous. Seawater is an aggressive environment, and freshwater is far less so in comparison.
James5103
External filters are not needed for the sea and are dangerous - indeed! It all depends on the maintenance of the equipment - if everything is done on time and properly, there will be no problems. However, there are individuals who even pull internal filters with wires (the turbine remains underwater on suction cups), while the wire is live in their hands, and accidentally break the thermostats that are turned on underwater. Fish jump out of the aquarium during maintenance, and then it stinks so much that it's impossible to enter the office, and they feed them with food (shrimp) that decomposes on the edges and ties, and the stingrays sting (which then requires an ambulance to take them to the hospital), and so on. :-))
Charles4157
100% completely unnecessary equipment at sea!!!
Joseph9203
Yes, there are enough activists, and they also degenerate themselves. I took on the task of saving a dying reef, but before me, one activist had been pouring tap water for a year to top it up and replace it, and my dog is reluctant to drink it. I won't even mention his other activities; it would make your hair stand on end (although he can present it beautifully, and who can compare to him anyway). And where is this specialist now? I’ll tell you, he’s now trading small goods at the market. But I believe that it takes a special mindset to sink to such idiocy.
Danielle9144
And where is this specialist, I’ll say, now he’s dealing in small things at the market. Sometimes you can earn more money from small things than from servicing! A little bit here and there, and a whole yard of crap :-))
Christopher3770
It’s probably a pattern. My aquarium also leaked (the seam came apart) at night. Could it be the house spirit causing trouble?
Brandi
Off-topic. Maybe he is too... narrow eyes, flat nose, not Russian himself...

Maintaining aquariums is about monitoring, changing, turning off, turning on, and carefully inspecting... all of this will yield positive results if the technical solutions of a particular object, as well as the quality of the materials it is made from, are at the right level. You can't make a candy out of crap, even with a strong desire...
Ryan1989
I don't want to be seen as a staunch defender of external filters in a marine aquarium, but still... Here is an aquarium that has been running for three and a half years solely on the Eheim 2026 external filter.
Brianna
No one is arguing, I have an aquarium without a sump, an external filter, a biofilter with one mini skimmer and two mechanical filters, and it has been running for two years. The point here is that an external filter can surprise you with a leak, which is what I wanted to say. Guys, understand the point, the conversation is not about what and how it lives, but about the "mine."
Amy5070
Yes, everyone has understood the meaning long ago! The thing is, the aquarium itself is a "ticking time bomb." And the surprise can come not only from the outside.
Lindsay
The aquarium is lovely, one might even say stunning. As for the Eheim, which is already 3 years old, it's time to find a place for it somewhere in the storage of forgotten things.
Rebecca
May I be curious about what light she has under her lid?
Randall7906
4 T8 at 18W. Two blue "Osram 67" and two daylight "Arcadia ine White".
Jason
And whose aquarium is it??? And what did you put in the canister?
John3335
Denya, I have already posted the website several times where you can take a look and, most importantly, read! (if you know English)
Lauren
Indeed, it's the most natural nonsense... I won't even bother to explain. Use the canister guys if you like... But I won't. And I'll tell others not to a thousand times. How many sailors, and not just them, have suffered because of this? What are you teaching, respected one? I consider this discussion closed, keep painting.
Adam
Off-topic: I prepared for two years, and here ... no thanks were given, my ego wasn't stroked, and I was called nonsense.
Eric
Offtopic Yeah... and you probably didn't put a canister on your lighter rhyme... what a shame, life would be even more fun... And if I were "crazy," I would be like you. Arguing on the forum is your hobby. You didn't make it as a sailor, so at least you succeeded here. In the future, write whatever you want, I don't care...
Marie5348
To avoid a new round of flooding and nonsense, I am closing the topic. Let everyone stick to their own opinion. I and many of my colleagues have already gone through the practical training with canister users, which involved fires, short circuits, 200 liters of water in the basement, and so on. If you enjoy such games, feel free to indulge, but I do not intend to defend the mercantile interests of various traders.
Apologies if anything is amiss.

The issue of biofiltration in external filters has been raised multiple times in freshwater discussions. No one can say how effective an external filter is as a biofilter. It's like the existence of God. However, any external filter, from Chinese to German, can leak, and the most frightening part is that they leak UNEXPECTEDLY!!! No amount of monitoring can prevent this. If it happens in freshwater... at most, it threatens a small flood and minor repairs for the neighbors below, but if it happens in saltwater... the wiring in homes is usually located inside channels in the ceiling slabs, and if it gets flooded, it will require major repairs for the neighbors below, and hopefully, there won't be a fire.
