Similarly, I have 5 pieces of 300 liters (of strombus), but they are rare guests in the sand - they all wander around the stones.

You need to forget the term DSB. Any layer of sand is alive. Even 5 cm. And where to get little bugs and worms? Just buy a couple of good, quality live rocks and stick them in the substrate. The cost is low, but the benefit will be significant.

For your information, I have plenty of bugs and worms!))) However, my Helmon has been successfully feeding on them for 2 weeks now... so they don't have much time left. When I was setting up the grid, I had to move the stone with the Parazoanthus. Under it, there turned out to be as many worms as there are earthworms in a garden under a board - a whole bunch. As for the rest, I agree with Stas.

When starting up, there are places where the sand is taken with a stone cake. This kind of cake won't dissolve on its own. It can be scratched a bit with something sharp, and then it will crumble.

Get a goby, or better yet, two! And sandstorms every half hour are guaranteed!

Lauren

Sandstorms are a wonderful support for the thread; it loves them, and thanks to them, it thrives even more. So they all went to stir up the sand...

Sorry for intruding on someone else's topic, but I have a question: different dirt accumulates on the surface of the soil, especially at the edges. Is it possible to remove such muck, and how??? (I have very fine sand)...

Bethany

Most likely, these are amphipods; there are many different species, over 9000, if I remember correctly... It's very good when they "create the weather" in the aquarium, and there are a lot of them. By feeding on detritus and leftover food, they help maintain the balance of the ecosystem and also take on the role of "ventilators" of the sand. Additionally, they can be eaten by many species of marine fish, which is also an important factor.

Melanie

Such friends can be referred to as polychaete worms (red-black bristle worms). They are VERY useful! Especially at night, they crawl everywhere, including soft corals, sand, and rocks, collecting all the detritus and leftover food.

Yes, along with the shrimp, they represent a powerful contingent of reef guardians. No technology will solve the main issues of maintaining balance if they are not present in the aquarium.

Heather9815

Yes, in the sea, most issues are resolved by the current and a large amount of water, but we have a closed cycle, which is where the sanitizers come in. Without them, it would be a swamp or heroic efforts would have to be made.
