Interesting question, I'm following the topic.

Cardinals in the hedgehog are still small. And strictly speaking, this is not called symbiosis. It is commensalism, or more precisely synoecy (from Greek literally "cohabitation"). Other options include anemones and shrimp.

Frederick

Why not? The cardinal fish receives protection among the poisonous spines of the sea urchin, while the urchin gets its skin cleaned of excess organic matter. To me, this is mutualism (mutually beneficial symbiosis) in its purest form... The same goes for the clownfish and the anemone, right? I also read about the cleaner shrimp, but as I understand, they are small and they cling to the tentacle of the anemone. By the way, there is information about them in that link from my previous post; you need to scroll further.

Christopher

Unfortunately, this is not the case. Young cardinals feed on plankton and do not clean the hedgehog in any way. Believe me, I have been observing them for a long time.

Lindsey3362

They don't clean... Moreover, as it is currently believed, the concept of "symbiosis" represents a mutually beneficial coexistence of two different organisms. Consequently... this is not symbiosis, but commensalism. Commensals, in this case, are the apogons, which find protection among the sharp spines of the diadem sea urchin, gaining a one-sided benefit. A vivid example of symbiosis is the mutually beneficial relationship between corals and single-celled algae, symbiodinium (zooxanthellae).

I read about zooxanthellae. But this is not the kind of symbiosis that one can observe for hours... I see that the topic is not interesting to the forum members.

Jesse3979

Well, why isn't it interesting? On the contrary... There are plenty of examples of various forms of symbiosis...

Brianna

Examples, please! Preferably with photos. If you have something like that, could you share a bit from your personal experience?

Brian6895

Is there really no information about symbiosis on the internet?

Destiny

There are some, but not much. It's all about clowns and clowns... I will post anything interesting I find here. But the vastness of the internet is nothing compared to the personal experiences of sailors. And I'm interested in it, unless of course it's a military secret.

There are examples of symbiosis in reef aquariums. However, it is not a widespread phenomenon. In mine, until recently, Neopterolistes maculatus lived. After the appearance of ocellaris clownfish, they disappeared.
