We can also talk about zeolite systems (from KZ or Fauna in).
Joseph8842
Hey, do you use zeolites? If so, what are the pros and cons of this type of filtration?
Joyce
I spent about 4 months trying to make this method work for me. Either the skis don't glide, or something is wrong in the conservatory... The result is zero. But the method is widely circulated. It probably deserves to be considered a filtering system.
Erica
Let's clarify which filtration systems we are talking about. Are we referring to natural systems or the so-called "chemicals"? If "chemicals" are valid, then we can add point 6: Chemi-pure, purigen, de'nitrate carbon, etc.
Erin2730
I would like to post the chemistry separately in another topic. Should I list filtration using Miracle Mud as a separate item or relate it to algae?
Helen
It will be interesting to see!

Here is my scrubber
The growth after one and a half weeks is a bit off; I made the screen incorrectly - it needs to be rougher so that as much culture as possible remains during cleaning, which will allow the algae to grow faster. In my case, the screen is made of mesh for plastering, and during cleaning, there are few algae left, so the interval between cleanings is about two weeks.
Maria
And what if the mesh is in several layers?
Lindsay
You can try, but I think it will only get worse, as the algae will remain in the mesh and rot due to the mass of the accumulated layer. I plan to make the next screen from mosquito netting, pre-coating it with silicone and sprinkling it with aragonite sand to give it roughness. As a result, the main layer will be removed, and between the grains of sand, there will be enough culture left to form new growths.
Courtney4094
Wouldn't it be easier to take a PVC sheet for the screen and scratch it/make some holes + cover it with the same mesh for plastering?
Darlene4238
It can be done that way, but I wanted the screen to be flexible for easy removal from the scrubber, although it is possible to find very thin PVC and, after applying silicone, cover it with sand.
Melissa3200
You can simply take synthetic burlap (those white bags). It doesn't rot. And silicone will adhere better to it than to PVC. Although, why use silicone on it? It's already "rough."
Deborah2682
Cool thing. Can you send a clearer photo of it? It's hard to see. What do you use to supply water? Did they say it smells on the logo? Is that true or not? And does the water make noise?
Patricia1746
Detailed photo of the scrubber?
Water is supplied by the Atman pump at 1100 l/h, but in reality, those figures are not accurate. There is no smell at all; I think this is said by those who have seen the scrubber in pictures but didn't dare to try it, or it is made incorrectly - the water should completely wash over the surface of the screen. If everything is done correctly, there is practically no noise at all. Try directing a gentle stream of water onto the glass while holding it vertically and slightly (a couple of centimeters) lowering it into the water, and you will understand for yourself.
Christopher1774
Yes, if it's not too much trouble. By the way, what do you have with nitrate phosphates?
Robert1845
How is the humidity in the cabinet when using the scrubber? After all, there is quite a large "restless" surface being washed with water. Is there a noticeable difference in humidity before and after installation?
Nancy758
Tomorrow I will take a photo, phosphates are not detected, nitrates have dropped to 1.
Amber6362
The thing is that I have an open nightstand system - without side and back walls, and humidity as such is not visible. But I can say that the water refill has increased by 1 liter per day.
Amy5070
I will subscribe to this topic - it's very interesting...!!!
So, if I understand correctly, you are using a "scrubber" in a marine aquarium, right???!!
Vanessa6144
probably not horizontal, but vertical
Yvette209
So vertical, thank you for the correction.
Joseph8592
I overlooked this topic - I really wanted to make a serum - I asked everyone - no one is aware and hasn't used it - respect to the author!!!
Here are a lot of serum options with photos, many of them can be made in half an hour - most claim that with the serum, cyan disappears from the display, the glass doesn't bloom, and the stones don't grow algae - photos are provided.
I will be crafting it anyway - I'm going to upgrade my own sample.
Lynn4242
Ser is a thing!
I use my method - I don't remove the net and don't rinse it - I take off the clumps of grass from the net without turning off the ser, leaving a sufficient amount of more or less fresh growth on the net.
The aqua shines!
Stuart
Can we please take a look? Treat us to some photos of your reef.
Crystal4879
also interesting to take a look

I just can't understand how a scrubber is fundamentally different from an algae scrubber? Well, apart from the design. In both cases, there are algae whose task is to absorb nitrates and phosphates. The "productivity" of both can be conditionally measured by the increase in the mass of algae. The question arises, is it really true that more algae are collected and discarded from a scrubber than from an algae scrubber?
John828
Ser to help the algae farmer.
Gary6376
Hmm.
Well, alright. I have a 50x50 cm algae tank. The light is 108 watts CFL.
I throw out 2-3 kg of chaetomorpha each month.
Can the ser help with something?
Nitrates and phosphates are at zero.
Leonard
Nitrates and phosphates at zero - it makes no sense.
Angel628
Therefore, the issue is not with sulfur as such, but simply with a properly functioning biological filtration system?
Amy9618
Of course.
Two very big advantages of sulfur are that it is easy to maintain (no dust in the system - if sponges are not used - I personally do not use sponges) + everything grows on it without exception, compared to chetomorph that sometimes grows and sometimes...
Robin
Well, there are no problems with maintaining the algae tank at all. The maintenance is just removing excess algae once a month. The other thing is that the ser is more compact.
James8887
Look at my aquarium - it is connected to a 10L algae filter with two mini Atman pumps. Without a filter, I think it would be very difficult.
Brandy1134
Comparing a savings bank and an algae farm is somewhat incorrect. The first thing that stands out is 108W versus 9. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, the consumption of macro elements differs between higher and lower levels (both in ratios and in substances). But all of this is demagoguery - without an experiment on the same system using both methods, one can argue for a long time.
Andrea9320
So
Kevin8087
Why argue.
It works for me on one system with both the sulfur and the algae scrubber - the effect is noticeable. (I recently added a mangrove as well)
My personal opinion - sulfur, when used correctly and with appropriate mesh areas, can and should replace the algae scrubber. (just to make it more fun)
Tracey
It may certainly be a substitute, and it performs its job well. However, from an aesthetic point of view, it falls short by 100%. As an additional food source, algae of 5-7 varieties significantly boost the immunity of many fish. For example, I have some algae that you can watch for hours without tearing your eyes away, and in terms of beauty, they are not inferior to some ornamental plants. So, I am in favor of a two-in-one solution: scaber + algae.
Lisa
Can I have a photo of yours (especially interested in the eyes)? I've been wanting a separate aquarium for plants for a long time.
Mark9853
I will add a video of my marine aquarium.
Stephen
It would be interesting to see all the others if it's not too much trouble. The ones in the photo I have (except for two).
Beautiful and useful.
Melanie
The Berlin filtration system (S.R.K. - dry reef rock) - Dry reef rock cannot be alive. The system is filled with live rocks from the aquarium or directly from the sea and is left to run for at least 4 to 6 weeks. If this is incorrect, I apologize.
Matthew
Hello everyone
Is it worth adding an aerobic filter to the header?
Post 83 and beyond
I made a similar one for myself, but I can't say much yet, I'm still getting started.
However, the fact that Anatoly has one is noteworthy.
If you're interested, I can share my photos.
Christopher1774
Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the device, etc., and I will insert it into the first post.
Karen1649
I can't describe it, I only made a detailed description in the link in the previous post #48. If allowed, I can copy and paste it.
David953
Incorrect, these are different things. It is not appropriate to compare wastewater with water in a marine aquarium. You provided a calculation for ammonia removal from 170 mg/L to 2-5 mg/L, while in an aquarium it needs to be from 1 mg/L to 0.1 mg/L. This means your settling tank of 5-10 square meters, roughly speaking, will have a capacity 170 times greater than necessary.
Jerry
Strangely enough, there are cases when neither the algae collector nor Sber works.
Curtis9143
Well, you are being quite radical. Then don't feed the aquarium at all. Stick to your principles.
I respect people who work with DSB. I am a fan of human labor and research, especially of experimenters. What fundamentally distinguishes detritus from silt? Compare the primary ratio of the materials being added. And don't confuse a silt field with a mechanical clarifier and a settling tank. (And if you are talking about sewage settling tanks where the detritus of Homo sapiens is mineralized and dried - then... suum cuique, pardon, I'm not referring to them).
Angela
People, can you tell me if it's possible to run a sea on distilled water or only on osmosis? Sorry for the off-topic.
David4968
The cleaner, the better.
Brenda
I have been using distillate for six years. You just need to measure the TDS. It should be good at 2-3. If the distiller is contaminated, it can be 5-6. That's not good anymore.
Julie3950
Which TDS meter should be used for such salt content? A laboratory one or a Chinese TDS-3 from Ali? Is calibration in this range not within the accuracy level of the TDS meter?
Melissa3820
I use Ali. Up to 40 TDS, I don't even worry about it. Everything is fine within reasonable limits.
Brandi
This shows the inorganic... "The unexplainable" can be more...
Judy
I check it in the lab. Calibrated. At 5-6, I usually command to clean the distiller. Usually, this happens once every six months. But a lot of gunk and scale accumulates during that time.
Spencer7805
Just out of curiosity, what parameters/numbers are used for calibration?
And the distillate 4-5 is a drop carryover...
Was the distillate tested for phosphates?
There were serious difficulties in preparing the phospholipid standard in the clinic by inexperienced lab technicians. Of course, the difficulty was known for a long time but could not be understood.
P.S. And is the distiller of the DE type?
