• Discussion of acquired live rock for the aquarium

  • Diana3118

I read the topic, looked at my stones... they remind me of something... only the glass rose popped up, and it was immediately eliminated... the water is clear, the beginnings of life are weak... it's the third day...

Chelsea

Very similar to M.S.R.C. (dry reef stones).

Jennifer5371

I got from Tkachev like J.K. (living stones), he said he kept them in the dark, we'll see... so far there have been no failures with Tkachev... the stones were brought in water, I saw for myself how they are kept in his dark aquarium... it's just the emptiness that is concerning... it's time for Armstrong to land))) if the stones don't come to life, I'll put in a freshwater diver and enjoy the glass roses.

Nicholas

I understood "holding back in the dark"... there are also such "technologies." In a dark room, we take S.R.K. (dry reef rocks), throw them into seawater, and, oh miracle, we get J.K. (live rocks) premium... Only a little left to wait for the Central Bank... and then we can invite Armstrong, but the landscape will resemble more of a Martian one.

Justin

Off-topic Nothing personal, but it made me smile People, a revolutionary method of delivering stones around Kyiv!!! Mega live stones!!! WE CARRY IN LIVE SEA WATER!!!

Brandon4517

that's for sure. Off-topic Innovation, starter culture, and sales, and then you spend half a year figuring out how to sort it out, looking for living creatures, if you find any.

Joseph591

Well, "without a fool, life is bad," sellers have to make a living somehow... let's water the stones with living water. I ordered another 5 kg of premium stone, waiting for it to be delivered in the coming days...

Jennifer7578

Damn, this is only possible on our forum at the suggestion of the moderators. It would all be funny if it weren't so sad...

Chris

Let's see, let's see. You say it's premium? P.S. "That's what the pike is for, so the crucian carp doesn't doze off."

Cheryl9296

Well, yes, I want to be a guide for beginners... how not to set up a marine aquarium, and I have a wooden stand and a MingYang pump and a cheap skimmer... I spent quite a bit of money... a note for beginners!

Catherine6534

Such "benefits"..... But not everyone admits to this.

Gabrielle5053

There is a good saying. My particle board cabinet is also covered, and Americans like to make frames for aquariums out of wooden beams. It's nothing to worry about; you'll figure it out over time. And don't be afraid to ask questions; you did the right thing by asking—someone answered, and the person understood the situation.

Alejandro

I have long suggested creating a FAQ for beginners... we can start with stones, why repeat others' mistakes. How can anyone know when setting up an aquarium how to choose the right stones... Honestly, I’m not worried—I’m sure it’s not that scary or complicated... well, the aquarium might just take a little longer to mature...

Maria

Yes! A FAG would be helpful!

For example: J.K. (living stones) - Living Stone S.K. - Dry Stone M.S.K. - Wet Dry Stone What other types are there? Many do not fully understand the decoding, and where is this written on the forum?

Patricia1746

Cool. Is this a new version of future scams???

Sara4035

In general, a stone is either alive or dry. And MS.R.K. (dry reef stones) or marine dry reef stone is, in my opinion, found only here. I haven't seen such a wonder anywhere else.

Aaron580

MS.R.K. (dry reef stones) - soaked dry reef stone. The dry stone is soaked for a couple of months.

Gregory9432

In my opinion, there are only two types of stones! L.S. (live stones) and D.R.S. (dry reef stones) (once alive but dried out, losing 75% of their value). And then!!!!!! L.S. (live stones) is further divided into two types: good and bad, and F.A.G. should teach how to distinguish them. D.R.S. (dry reef stones) is divided into four types - W.D.R.S. (wet dry reef stone), M.D.R.S. (moistened dry reef stone), S.D.R.S. (soaked), and Y.D.R.S. (your option). Bring on F.A.G!!!

Erica

Well, the issue with the stand is debatable; at least I didn't have to change it. I don't know about the left pen and the pump, the size isn't right for me. Not everyone has metal frames anyway. I think if the aquarium matures for a long time, it will be good for strombus. After I moved to a bigger place, I had a cyanobacteria outbreak; the snails were digging almost around the clock. I would go to sleep and wake up to find them still digging. My mother, who hadn't seen them for two weeks, said they had grown at least an inch; I have two of them. But how to feed your ten? P.S. There's also the option of dry live rock (as mentioned above, it has things that can die and cause issues, so it's considered live).

James4342

Let's start a collection of foolishness! S.R.K. (dry reef stones) M.S.R.K. (dry reef stones) J.S.R.K. (dry reef stones) S.J.K. (live stones) - what a mess!!! R,S, I wonder if defecating in a hat will make it come to life too!

Eric5208

Igor, I don't know about the hat, but if this act is performed on S.R.K. (dry reef stones), it will literally transform before your eyes into Premium J.K. (live stones) of the highest quality!

Tracy4603

Well, now I at least know what Premium J.K. (living stones) for 25 currency units is.

Crystal4879

Have you seen anything like this anywhere else?

Kathleen

I suggest introducing another term into the classification - HRC, cunning reef stone, or lousy reef stone. Of course, this won't make it any easier for us, and a crafty supplier will figure out what’s what in 7 seconds... it's just that I still feel sorry for the newcomers; they believe everything like children...

Nicholas5194

You need to eat more beets - the coral will be brighter.

Alan273

Jokes aside, there is actually such a chaos going on! Let's create a FAQ (question for the experts) so that newcomers can at least understand something on their own before listening to the "experts" and filtering information! Otherwise, a person might want to go to sea, find themselves in such a situation, and say, "No way!" And that would mean one less sailor! It's not about the earnings, but about the fact that a person's dream has been shattered forever, and we already have so few dreams left!

Jennifer5371

No, no, no. This is purely our thing. For: I think that, unfortunately, not every beginner can distinguish the quality of stones by their appearance. It's hard to specify any clear criteria. Yarik (who) once raised this issue on the forum. Not everything is obvious. Definitely, premium live stones should be freshly imported. They should be porous and relatively light. The box should smell like the sea when opened, not like rot. There should be a lot of non-legals and vegetation. If you received a stone in the described condition, you are a lucky person. And all the holding, soaking, deliveries in live water... it's all nonsense.

Darrell7542

Well, it doesn't have to be freshly imported if it is stored properly afterwards! But who will believe the importer that this is the real one and not...

Noah1632

Well, I agree, I can't tell the difference between fresh stone and old stone, and especially from which part of the reef and from what depth - it's all a dark forest. However, it's possible to distinguish J.K. (live stones) from S.R.K. (dry reef stones) (M.S.R.K. (dry reef stones), SJK, and whatever else there was), "colored" from "black and white." It's better to have a poor J.K. (live stones) than to get dry (...) at the price of J.K. (live stones).

Carrie1606

I agree, but how to find these sailors in my city? I admit, I didn't read for long, and during that time I didn't even pay attention to which city was under the nickname (I don't know any other way). When I go to a pet store in my city and ask, "Do you have anything for the sea?" many people don't understand what I'm talking about, and they rarely say "no." Digging through the entire section, looking for where it says "Odessa" in the signature (for me) can drive you crazy. In some cities, there are no people who deal with marine aquaristics at all. So, as always, we learn from our own experience.

Linda

The whole issue lies in storage. Many importers euphemistically refer to it as "holding." However, in my opinion, if a stone has been sitting for a couple of months in a bath (tub, aquarium) with watering, light, etc., its value as a LIVING STONE decreases significantly.

Christopher8654

It could turn out to be a very expensive experience! And in Odessa, I know Volodya "ichthyologist," I don't think he will refuse to help!

Catherine6534

Well, I won't argue—there are as many opinions as there are people! If the stone is kept in an aquarium with a foam filter and light, and the client ends up with illegal plants and vegetation, then I don't think it's a complete disaster!

Melissa3820

personal experience is always costly (not always in money), but what can you do? I already know about Sasha, Misha, and Volodya - I didn't know before. And Andrey invited me over a month ago, but I still haven't made it.

Heather6148

I liked the stones at Biokon. Especially the ones on the left. This is the cut from the top. If they were J.K. (live stones) - they would be really cool. But they are S.R.K. (dry reef stones). Tkach bought them for a dollar and put them in the water.

Michael826

I bought 12 each.

Katherine

Well, that's a different matter. I thought they sold you stones for 20. Upi just has a bit of good live rock for 20 (5 kilograms). I don't know the quality of Rey's, but many praise the live rock. The dollar per kilogram is probably abroad (I don't know where they are brought from) without considering shipping. Here it's 4-5-6, but dry rock that has been in a good system will be more expensive (I've read). I might be wrong about something; I still have little experience.

Jennifer7159

It was planned to have +5 J.K. (living stones) for 25 units in 2-3 weeks, as I was building a budget system, we only saved on sand and salt... I can send the overall estimate to those interested via email, I don't want to engage in advertising or anti-advertising...

Angel628

Off-topic It reminded me of a joke. This is the percentage we live on...

Kimberly2102

However, lately you have been adding zeostones. The question becomes interesting here—why pay for live rocks if you can create the necessary strain in the system with dry reef rocks that will settle in the rocks within a week and thrive? You can grow Carolina in a month from a micro piece of rock with an active aquarium using something like Purple Up, for example. And all those little worms and such—who needs them anyway?

Stephanie4990

Has anyone already started an aquarium solely with dry reef rocks (D.R.R.) and added bacteria from a bottle without any live rocks (L.R.)? I mean a successful one... Just curious...

Larry9400

But where can one find the necessary stamp if there are no J.K. (living stones) or ampoules like bacteria?

Kristen2246

I haven't tried with the ampoules, but the main thing is that I already understand the principle. It might work for those folks who treat the sea as a business; they have extra aquariums and gear. I think the result will be positive.

Mark9853

Bio Digest. Ampoules "filled" with strains. When viewed under a microscope, they turned out to be just colored water, nothing more... Well, that just came to mind... But in general, a good live rock will give 100,000 points ahead of any cultured dry rock, especially in the early stages of reef development...

Danielle

After acquiring several kilograms of live rocks, I can say the following: the "moon" rocks that I loaded first weigh like feathers compared to the live rocks from different places. I still didn't understand the problem with the weight and the falling of the rocks... now it's clear. In general, I believe that those first live rocks I bought are worth their 12 bucks; they are really light... if only all live rocks were like that.

Mike

Well, this is just in terms of savings!

Joseph8842

If you dry out L.K. (living stones), I think it will also be light! But then it will no longer be L.K. (living stones)!

Lynn4242

Technology doesn't stand still - it moves ahead of us. I once started with the postulate that live rocks (L.R.) are the best. Now it's clear that dry reef rocks (D.R.R.) can be turned into proper rocks with bacteria within 3 months. The downsides - initially a lunar landscape. The upsides - there's none of the junk that we later describe in sections like "who popped up" and "how to get rid of this creature," etc. P.S. And I no longer believe the postulate from the highly respected book by Ova and Savchuk - "you should plant acroporas in a mature aquarium for at least a year" - that's nonsense!

Anne4851

You are right, at first I thought it was the right recommendation. But when I set up a new aquarium at home and prepared it for SPS and LPS, meaning I salted 50% and added water from an existing reef, along with some macroalgae, a bit of live rock, and a large portion of dry reef rock, after three months I moved all the LPS to the new aquarium. It has been almost four months now, and everything is okay, although there were some issues in the first month with all sorts of junk coming from the Caribbean Sea sand, and only the strombus snails managed to handle it. However, I won't claim that for sure, as there are quite demanding SPS corals, and I don't have them, so maybe that's why everything went so smoothly for me.

Bonnie

Colleagues, with all due respect, the recommendations of Ova and Savchuk are correct. At the very least, they protect beginners from costly mistakes. An experienced person can already avoid many errors. Still, there are always caveats: overstocked live rocks, not all water is charged, a lot of macrophytes at the start, balling, good lighting (which, at first, not everyone installs due to its cost). And it’s rightly emphasized that probably not all SPS and LPS are easy to adapt to a "restarted" system, especially a new one.

Charles4157

Well, look, I salted the lunar aquarium around May 10, with about 40 kg of rock, and added about 10 kg of real live rock over the course of a month. Indeed, animals prefer to live on live rock... but the moon also started to be covered with Carolina, and the worms crawled there (I pricked my fingers yesterday while moving it). So this method probably has a right to exist... although the savings for the sea might be questionable: 40 kg x 8 dollars = 320 dollars... it turned out to be quite a lot - a refrigerator...

Laura3673

The thing is that mainly live rocks are needed during the startup!

Jessica5348

How much? I think my setup is going perfectly, the only unplanned thread algae was brought in with live rocks from someone else's aquarium... and it only lives there, the brown film has almost disappeared, little bugs are running on the glass, there are plenty of worms, is 100% live rock really necessary?

Robert800

Gentlemen defenders and lovers of S.R.K. (dry reef rocks)! Stop being disingenuous and admit that the only reason for your love of S.R.K. (dry reef rocks) is its price, and that's it! At least that would be honest! Otherwise, after a couple more pages of this nonsensical topic, someone will claim that L.K. (live rocks) are evil and their use in marine aquariums is contraindicated. But what prevents you from arranging L.K. (live rocks) "as you wish"? For example, how?

Emily3144

I'm not saying that nothing can be done with live rock; of course, it can be done, but it's easier to work with dry rock, and you can achieve more diverse structures. This is purely my opinion, and I'm not imposing it on anyone. As for Helmon, not every Aiptasia eats it, and when you want to buy it, it's often unavailable; for example, some of our friends have been trying for six months.

Lindsay

That's right, not everyone. Helmon, who doesn't eat aiptasia, is not excluded from the possibility of being poisoned. Such a fish won't live long. Mine has been with me for about 5 years and destroys aiptasia instantly—it's typical food for this fish. My colleague has one that's been living for 2 years as well, also a fierce enemy of aiptasia, but it's his second one—the first one not only didn't eat it, it didn't eat at all, no matter how hard we tried, until it died...

Amber

J.K. (live rocks) - what kind of creature is this? There are different types of rock, porous and not so much (light and heavy), depending on how it is transported and preserved. Experience is important here. When you handle rocks from different suppliers with your own hands... And S.R.K. (dry reef rocks) - that's great, even very much so. And it's mainly because of the price. Added after 1 minute +100% And the fact that it won't leach silicates and other substances (dried organic matter will decompose).

Katie3017

So what are we really deciding here? Do everything as you see fit, and may happiness be with you! Let everyone decide what they need! Otherwise, we start figuring out which came first, the egg or the chicken! As I understand it, there is a contingent that cannot be convinced!

William

If I were offered a wonderful dry rock (S.R.K.) at a dumping price (it's a pity, though, that this almost never happens) and next to it stood a beautiful live rock (J.K.) at nominal price, I would without hesitation take the latter, and even more if the price were above nominal... Because this is live rock (J.K.)!!!! I will definitely continue to improve the reef. But only through live rock (J.K.). There is no alternative, as there cannot be. Price is the very last aspect... Dry rock (S.R.K.) is simply unnecessary for me. This is my personal point. No pressure...

Ashley5975

Because it's J.K. (live rocks)!!!! - BRAVO! A marine aquarium is not a cheap hobby, and before you decide, you need to determine whether you can spend the amount or if you'll be reinventing the wheel! I don't judge anyone (God forbid), but it turns out that if you want to calmly observe it in the future and marvel at what you see, rather than constantly sitting and thinking about what to do to get rid of unwanted... and so on, endlessly and impossibly! Don't skimp on your hobbies - what else do you have left in this life!

Michael

Everything is correct, that's why I gladly quoted you... Let those who should think about the importance of what was said.

Eric5208

I understand people who cannot spend a certain amount on L.R.C. (live rocks), but why claim that it is not better than D.R.C. (dry reef rocks) when they subconsciously know that it is not true! Just say it directly, and everyone will understand and help as much as they can! You can start with D.R.C. (dry reef rocks), but it will lead to extra time and costs!

Amber9312

No, it can't be!!! It's DEAD and nothing will grow from it! Something may settle on it from the nearby live rock, if there is any present... But it will no longer be the so-called "premium live rock."

David3217

What? It can be if it lies in the Red Sea for about 5 years. In fact, I provided a quote for those who buy live rocks from the target audience and then ask questions like "Why does my live rock look like dry reef rock?" The target audience has been given an answer.

Scott8536

Well, except that...

Julie

Off-topic With a light movement of the hand, the pants turn into..........

Sandra7004

Yes, there is such an aquarium; it is very old, and at the time of its launch, there simply weren't any rocks, and there are almost no live rocks in it—90% is shell rock, and no one knows how much effort was put in to bring it to its current state! It is well known that live rocks are definitely better, but it's up to each person to decide what to use! Most people say that dry reef rocks are better, yet they regret not being able or willing to spend money on live rocks! And in the sea, once you take on a task, don't say you can't handle it!

Jessica

It seems you've strayed from the topic with Tolik. I haven't seen anyone in the posts claiming that S.R.K. (dry reef rocks) are better than J.K. (live rocks). It seems everyone has a different opinion. Or are you just entertaining yourselves? For example, I suggested in several posts earlier that a system could be built using S.R.K. (dry reef rocks) + starter culture, which would look great in six months. If there were an opportunity to do it, I would. But I think there are some hobbyists on the forum who have the resources and can confirm this. Maybe one of them will chime in someday.

Rick

No one is arguing - you can build a system on dry rock (DR) or even without anything at all! But I can populate an aquarium with live rock (LR) in 2 days and avoid various problems instead of sitting and waiting for everything to settle and how it will go from there! Overall, I believe this argument is pointless and changes nothing! In any case, everyone will stick to their own views!

Erica752

That's the whole point... That's why I would call this topic not absurd, but explanatory, so that people can at least understand a little bit the meaning of the arguments presented above. By the way, the link in your post is very timely, thank you...

Beth3383

Tolik, how many liters of live rocks do you have in your aquarium?

Tasha

As far as I know and have seen, Anatoly has about 100 kg of live rock in the reef, and probably around 5-6 kg has been added this year. In the fish tank, there are both dry reef rocks and Black Sea live rocks, as well as some from the Indo-Pacific. Anatoly will explain in more detail.

Omar3497

Tolya, I just asked)) without any ulterior motives. What if something happens to the aquarium))) Just a joke. It's like when they ask Listerman - Petya, what the hell do you need money for - he says - I'm saving up. - I want to buy the Playboy empire. When Hefner dies, I'll buy it right away, as soon as Astafyeva calls back))) PS Live rocks are a thing - but there are options. In general, I'm for new technologies.

Jade

I too...

Rick

Well, I think the men have argued enough. It's time to open a new topic, like new technologies completely without stones. Although the topic of catfish is interesting in itself...

Charles

Пожалуйста, предоставьте текст для перевода.

Heather9815

Firstly, there was no dispute as such, and to open such a topic, technologies completely without stones, there was already a specialist in our circle who, instead of live stones, had "corals" made from ASTT (a material used in dentistry). The "effect" was so astounding that the guy abandoned marine aquaristics and now, like a respected elder storyteller, recounts by the light of the campfire to naive audiences the incredible heights he once reached in the field of marine research... Thank you for the offer...

Brian

I was actually joking... This material has become very popular among the bourgeois lately, judging by their websites. Unlike us, they are more flexible with experiments. I would love to see this wonder. But as they say, the best road is the one you know, and at the moment we have a well-established technology specifically for J.K. (living stones).

Kenneth2761

Sorry, I might be wrong, but the aquarium from post 91 looks like it was just filled, corals were placed in it, and then it was photographed! It looks quite uninhabited!

Adam

Yes, there is even a pump in Carolina, it may only be after servicing or just the design is such that it creates this impression. I like this design, not many stones, corals, and small schools of fish. Fedor did something similar at his place.

Todd8452

What's going on in the samp?

Laurie3842

I don't know, I need to ask Solomir where the link is from. Even though it says there that many people know this aquarium, I am seeing it for the first time.

Marie5735

Пожалуйста, предоставьте текст для перевода.

Tanya

Me too. The photos, however, are different upon closer inspection. And then - 100% S.R.K. (dry reef rocks) - a mixed type (?). What is there, and what was mixed with?

Patricia1746

Пожалуйста, предоставьте текст для перевода.

Gregory9432

Пожалуйста, предоставьте текст для перевода.

Jennifer7578

Well, they could have taken the pump from another aquarium! That's true! And actually, he has some nice hard corals growing on the S.R.C. (dry reef rocks)! Well done! And a mixed type probably means LPS and SPS.

Amber9312

To be honest, I didn't see anything interesting there. If you compare the reefs of Denis or Stas, this American is just resting, and it's better to take examples from our own specialists.

Eric5208

Пожалуйста, предоставьте текст для перевода.

Timothy

Among us, there are also those with S.R.K. (dry reef stones), here is post 104.

Dana4701

Why did you decide that this is "100%" dry reef rock? I followed the link you provided, as well as this link, but nowhere does it say that the aquarium is set up with dry reef rock... Maybe I missed something...

Steven

Appearance can be deceptive, especially in photos! Just because the rocks look clean doesn't mean they are dry reef rocks (S.R.K.)! They could very well be what is known as "Cured Live Rock." This means the rock has been cleaned and held, but not dried!

Lindsey3628

Unfortunately, everything has been deleted, but from memory, it is quite possible to distinguish S.R.K. (dry reef stones) from Life Rock. And there is surely something in the auxiliary tanks as well. By the way, DSB looks quite alive...

Joyce

From this point, in more detail...

Michael3221

If it helps at all... It's better to spend 15-20 USD on even a mediocre J.K. (living stones) than to pay a lot of money for something that is worth nothing.

Raven7170

There was a link in the private message...

Gary6376

It refers to supplements such as amino acids, iodine, strontium, coral food, etc.

Phillip9722

I just wrote the names randomly that I know. Sometimes you come across ads online like, with our product your aquarium will mature in three days, and the water will be better than in the Red Sea, and your fish will be happy (especially the last part is funny, I can just imagine a coral smiling).

Joseph8592

For this +1000-chocolate for corals, I meant the so-called "starter" additives that flood the pet market. It's like a mirror for the dead...

Matthew

The funniest part is that people bought dry reef rocks (DRR) at the price of live rocks (LR). This was at the beginning of the topic. It's a complete scam. Launching with dry reef rocks (DRR) with bacteria, live rocks (LR), or dry reef rocks (DRR) is a personal choice, BUT! A person should at least know what they are buying! People want to buy live rocks (LR), but instead, they get dry reef rocks (DRR) at the price of live rocks (LR). How is that normal? And not a single comment from the seller in sight...

Martin3206

Yes, there was already a comment. They wrote that the comrades made a mistake.
