• I want to try mini-sea.

  • David4089

Good afternoon. I really want to try the sea. I am completely clueless about it. I don't understand anything at all. Just a request, please don't send me to the Aqua-Logo forum; I looked there, but I still didn't understand anything. I have a few questions to start with. 1. An aquarium for 70 liters. 2. What is better to use, quartz sand or crushed coral? 3. What kind of filter is needed, with what types of media? 4. What water should be added to the aquarium for the initial setup? Thank you.

Robin

Little but stubborn))))... what do you plan to hold? Don't be afraid - the sea is only scary at first)) Then you'll drift away from the shore - the waves are calmer there)) "We'll help," if anything. Decide what you'll hold. For starters. It will be a bit heavier in 70 liters. And don't listen to the panic-mongers. Patience, perseverance, and love for the sea - and everything will work out. By the way, you have plenty of good sea specialists in Moscow. Good luck!

Aaron580

Thank you for the kind words. I don't know what to hold on to. I don't understand anything about this at all. I need to start somewhere. First, I need to figure out what equipment is necessary. I've read that everything is very difficult. BUT - I'm not afraid of frequent water changes. I work in a pet store, so there won't be any problems with salt or feeding. However, our aquarists know nothing about the sea. All hope is on the forum.

Curtis9143

test kits for pH, Kh, ammonium. a device for measuring water density. They are available in abundance, choose based on your budget. Tetra salt is good, not too expensive, just right for starting up, and not only for starting. It’s good on its own. Water - osmosis or distilled. Don’t buy bottled water, forget it, no matter what they say. Osmosis is sold on every corner (definitely in Moscow))). I buy it - no complaints. For flow, a pump... Without it, it’s not possible..)) "Coral nano" for example.

Joseph9203

So, about osmosis. What is it used for? Does this thing need to be connected to something?

Rodney3101

For 70 liters, I don't think it's worth buying an osmosis system. You can order it for home delivery. When I started, they brought me 800 liters on two trucks)))))))). At least here they deliver. It's not expensive, around 4...

Tricia7885

Sorry for the confusion. So, is it possible without osmosis? If so, please provide more details. I think I can settle clowns, an anemone, and a star. Is that correct?

Erica752

Thank you for your response. Of course, I meant that the anemone will be much later. I just wrote that I generally want it in the aquarium. I didn't understand what kind of substrate is needed. Coral gravel or quartz sand? Oh, my head is spinning, but it's okay, gradually... I just spoke with our aquarists. They asked me to write down what brands I need so they can order it for me. Our girl aquarist supported my idea, saying she has dreamed of it for a long time, so we decided to start together.

Dana4701

Good day! It's a pity that you didn't send it...... You missed a very interesting topic by Lev about mini "Nemo"! In it, you can find all the answers to today's questions and those that will arise. And whatever you can't find, our seamen will always help, but do read the topic, you won't regret it!!! Good luck!

John3187

I read this topic, but I didn't understand much, being a bit clueless. And also, I didn't get something—are they siphoning the soil into the sea?

Debra8438

Read the book "Reef Aquarium (by A. Savchuk S.)" and "Reef Nano Aquariums, Equipment and Care," by Daniel Knopp. Be sure to read it! It will save you from many questions.

Jacqueline5976

The concept won't come immediately, which is why we all advise you to read more... there's a sea of information, and some of it is quite contradictory... The concept of "siphoning" as in freshwater does not exist in the sea. In the substrate of a marine aquarium, there are plenty of useful little creatures, worms, brittle stars, tiny snails... If necessary, the top layer can be carefully removed, for example, from cyanobacteria. Different systems, different approaches, and each has the right to exist. You need to figure this out for yourself first, read, read...

Thomas

Thank you. I have time, I will read.

Angela

A long time ago, when I was a cadet at AVVAU (Achinsk Flight School), one instructor said: when a cadet asks the silliest questions, it already indicates that he is starting to understand something and has a desire to learn. But if a cadet doesn't ask any questions, and even worse, claims that he knows everything, that is the most obvious sign that he will never lift the aircraft into the air himself... In your case, the first example is clearly evident. So, don't hesitate to ask questions; your desire to become a marine aquarist is valuable...

Christine864

Thank you. You instill hope that everything will work out.

Charles894

I was also bombarding everyone with questions here. If there is a desire, everything will work out!

Jennifer5784

It's already happening. And the time of the great sea is just around the corner, am I right?

Jeffery

I think it's not far off at all.

Nicole2404

Yes, of course. Yesterday, the empty shrimp tank really crashed; I'll buy a new one in a few days, move the shrimp from the 70L to the 50L, and then we're good to go.

Stephen

Well, 7 feet under the keel to the new sailor!!!

Rebecca1419

Thank you. Ha-ha, thought you got away with it? Not so fast. They replied that not every aquarium is suitable for the sea, and suggested I find out why not all are suitable. I searched but didn't find anything. Actually, I'm quite impatient; what do you think, why isn't every aquarium suitable? I suspect it has to do with size?

James8887

It's not about the size; perhaps not every freshwater fish can be equipped with marine gear. That option is also possible.

Heather

Hmm, maybe you are right. But how can we know?

Christopher8654

Better take the RESUN DMS-500.

Larry

It doesn't really suit me. I mean in terms of size. The Aqua is on the floor with dimensions width 30, height 40, length 60, while the RESUN DMS-500 is almost square.

Melissa2062

Oops, and what do you think, to put the sea on the floor? Excuse me, but don't get ahead of the train. Read more, and it wouldn't hurt for you to meet and talk to sailors. You really need it like oxygen, believe me. Souvenir.

Jennifer5784

The draft is not suitable! From the draft to the direct rays of the sun!!!

Hunter1471

I understood about the pond, but there is no sun there. As for communicating with sailors, I think that's a good idea. We really need to learn the basics first. Question - kitchen? I don't think that's great either. My husband quit smoking, but the smells... My husband will soon kick me out of the house. I'm fighting him for every inch for the aquarium. I negotiated from 200 liters for the rays to 400 liters, but they are still in it. Oh, where can I find a husband who is an aquarist? /joke/

Monica

If there is a hood in the kitchen and the aquarium is planned not near the stove, then there will be no problems. Many people have aquariums in the kitchen...

Jeremy

Find a suitable place for the future aquarium besides, of course, the window, measure the parameters, and order an aquarium from a company to be made according to the rules: double bottom, ribs around the perimeter at the top, black sealant, special for aquariums.... The kitchen option is not the best, but if there is absolutely no space...

Bethany

The main thing is not to rush. The sea is about gradualness, moderation, and stubbornness. And don't be afraid of anything, everything will work out. In the kitchen, there's a sea of kvass... mmm. In my opinion, it's not worth it. The extractor won't save you.

Kimberly

Are there still freshwater aquariums? A year after launching the saltwater tank, let me know if they still exist. The ocean is so captivating that the freshwater aquarium takes a backseat. Over time, you will start thinking about how to convert the freshwater tank into a saltwater one. It's indeed better to start with a small tank to practice. As for the aquarium itself, it's best to break down the questions: what do you want to see in it (you should have some clarity), the size of the aquarium (there should also be some clarity), lighting, current, filtration, and the design of the aquarium itself.

Adam

Here is the topic where this was discussed:

Caroline1599

So. First steps 1. I decided to leave the shrimp tank as it is since the cherry shrimp are breeding. 2. First, buy an aquarium, either JEBO or JAD, with a volume of 20-30 liters. 3. On Saturday, I return from vacation to work and start ordering supplies, salt, etc. 4. I decided to place the small aquarium in the kitchen for now, as it's easier to move a small aquarium later to a larger room where the air conditioner is, or I might leave it in the kitchen. 5. And of course, I’m constantly online, reading and learning. Is everything correct?

Robin

Why do you need those 20 liters? Get a 70-liter tank. At least that will be something! I have a 34-liter aquarium, and it's a struggle for the fish. You don't need to buy an osmosis system for a small aquarium, but it's more convenient with one.

Linda

The main thing is that my husband doesn't mind going for water often)). P.S. Topic starter - ask more questions, I also plan to launch a small aquarium. (for now, I've stopped at Resun DMS 500)

Holly

Sorry, I didn't understand. WHICH WATER should I take from the neighbor who is an aquarist?

Daniel9952

water that has been purified through reverse osmosis. You've probably heard of it? It is sold in grocery stores. You buy this water and use it to prepare the sea at a ratio of 35g per liter. A hydrometer and salt are purchased right away. Have you already bought them? By the way, regarding a larger aquarium, you are being advised very correctly...

Kimberly

Oh, I read that, and I mistakenly thought that it was possible to pour from the neighboring jug.

Selena4467

God forbid! By the way, you can slowly start preparing purified water, meaning making seawater, but you must definitely check the density with a hydrometer. It should be 1.022-1.024 at a water temperature of 24-25 degrees.

Javier5186

Thank you, today I will try to order salt and a hydrometer. I want coral sand for the bottom.

Corey3201

I have a question. Is the Tetra-TEC 600 external filter suitable for saltwater up to 120 liters?

Katie4842

I am certainly far from the point of giving advice, but I think it's quite possible! You can make a very good bio-filter out of it.

Michael

Is it necessary to have bio in the aquarium? If so, do you think the internal filter Atman-881 would be suitable (if you know that filter)?

Matthew

In the aquarium that you want to set up, it will serve as a bio-filter. Live rocks, sand, bacteria, etc. Do you really imagine how to fit the filter you mentioned into your aquarium?

Larry9400

Canister filters are usually not used in the sea. A couple of years ago, they were relevant, but now... They are called "nitrate factories." It's not worth it. Except for a small one, with a volume of 0.5 liters, for adding carbon, anti-phosphate, and other adsorbents as needed. But I repeat, I don't see the point in it.

Noah1632

In the 70-liter tank with shrimp, I had a similar filter from Ferplast. It cleaned well.

Kristin

But basically, if there is a filter, can we put sorbents in there?

Jacob4800

Remove the insides and place the bojK (living stones) inside. By the way, this is a good example of using a canister.

Brent8919

It is the sorbents, not bio-balls, sponges, or ceramics. But you will need a glass of carbon and a stack of anti-phosphate (this is approximately by volume, not a joke). And the capacity of the canister filter? According to the link, its volume is 5.7 liters. It is better to use it in a freshwater aquarium, and you should take something smaller, and is it even necessary?

Emily3144

I am not talking about your filter. Your filter can be applied.

Holly

It can be done that way. But the J.K. (live rocks) in the canister will get clogged and won't work as effectively. Although this option is also interesting.

Jeffrey496

So I also talk about one like you wrote, it fits wonderfully in the aquarium, but I don't know how it is for the sea.

Elizabeth

It's clear, but in general, can TETRA tech be used in saltwater? Will anything corrode over time?

Mitchell7972

Why do you need it there... Take some small hang-on mechanical filter. Get a pump of about 900 liters or even better two of 500. Mechanical filtration - hang-on filter Bio-filtration - live rocks, substrate in your aquarium.

Wendy2244

Clogging can be prevented by regularly disassembling the canister and carefully rinsing it and the media in pre-prepared water from an active aquarium.

Nancy758

It's a pity it will be left unused; otherwise, it could have found a purpose.

Wendy2244

Then be sure to stick it in.

Teresa

Thank you for the answers! The atman-881 is small and will fit in there without any problems, but since it is not needed, I won't force it in.

John1464

If you don't have a tight lid, a small hang-on filter will fit perfectly! Atman 881 Length - 21.5 cm Height - 20 cm Width - 6 cm For a small aquarium

Lauren

I will have a DIY lid made of PVC, I don't know what a blind lid is, but it will be like "nature" to completely cover the aquarium - like yours with the 34L at the sea. As for the filter, my aquarium is 50x30x35 - it fit perfectly.

Veronica

If you noticed, my lid is raised by 4 cm. There are a lot of wires, and it's dangerous to place the lid close. Right now, they are selling San-San lights that can be very well fitted without worrying about the lid! Regarding the filter, it will fit, but keep in mind that you will also need to place the pump, heater (if needed), and about 7 kg of liquid. Why steal the already limited space? Do you really need that?

Brenda

I noticed, but I have a one-room apartment with a 12-square-meter room where there is already a 150-liter aquarium, and it is already providing sufficient evaporation. If I also place a sea aquarium with the lid raised nearby, which will also provide enough evaporation, then there will be condensation everywhere in the apartment, leading to peeling wallpaper and various other issues.

Frank7213

Then you can take a regular small mesh filter inside + a small flow pump.

Caleb6320

Something's wrong with the computer.

Erin2730

JAD Aquarium, Home L-ASD 320L, 31L, green. Size 310x330x455 Energy-saving lamp: voltage 220V, frequency 50Hz, power 11W Submersible pump: voltage 220V, frequency 50Hz, power 11W, capacity 690L/hour, double bottom and pump. Do you think it will work?

Tricia7885

It will work, but the lighting will need to be redone. And the pump is a question! Take the Resan 500.

Thomas5021

What is the purpose of making a false bottom in the sea? Is it essential?

Elijah7048

Fake plants are practically never used. There's no need for them in an aquarium.

Brooke

Hello everyone. I'm still not tired of the sea, I keep reading and reading. I haven't decided on the aquarium yet. I'm really puzzled. I want something bigger, but it scares me. There's an option for a Chinese aquarium with glass but without light. I need to buy a lamp. The volume is 50 liters. Maybe that one?

Kayla7655

Resan 500, cheap and cheerful. The overwhelming majority of mini sea descriptions are specifically for this model.

Lindsey3628

I can only give +1.

Jeremy8404

The more I read, the less I understand. A quick question - can I create a mini-reef with shrimp and some other invertebrates in a 30-liter tank, without fish? I also really like anemones. Do I need to change the lighting for the reef? We don't have a Resun at work, but there is an opportunity to get a similar aquarium through procurement, which I think looks very much like a Resun.

Anna9752

Theoretically possible, practically difficult. 30 liters is even too little for any anemone. Yes.

Danielle

Yes, and on Leo's forum it says that an anemone and clownfish live there? So who can fit in there?

Jessica9188

You should carefully read about the efforts she puts into living there. If you are ready to dedicate half a day to your aquarium (not just looking at it), you can give it a try. And don't forget, Leo has years of practice, not just one or five, and he has far more than one aquarium. Using his mini Nemo as an example for an absolute beginner in the sea is a direct mockery of the animals.

Marie5348

Oops, that's disappointing. Well, who will live there without problems then? Tomorrow they are supposed to come to check the shrimp tank; I think if they don't take it, maybe I can redo it to 70 liters?

Colin1418

Good evening. Thank you for your response. I think I will stick with 70 liters after all. I know from experience that later I will want more and more livestock. The lighting has been changed, and there is a fixture like this one. Regarding the Resun, I want to keep it simple. It's called "I made you from what I had." If I keep 70 liters, what equipment do I need for it? I mean, do I need a filter? A pump is obviously needed. There is a filter like this one. Remove everything from the compartments, keep the sponge and carbon. Sorry for inserting links; my computer doesn't want to format the photos.

Barbara

Honestly, I will say that molding from what you had will cost you more. The Resan 500 is a sufficiently cheap and optimal solution. Plus, I am sure that in your modified aquarium, you will need to top off the water, as it will spoil significantly if the lid does not fit tightly to the aquarium; with the Resan, water evaporates minimally. And the sea is like a child - you can't buy something extra for yourself... everything goes into the aquarium.

Jessica5016

How are the successes in the maritime field? What will you delight and surprise us with? Soon it will be 70 years for your sea...
