I can't understand why a sea urchin is needed in a marine aquarium and if it can be done without one.

Brian

For a small aquarium, water changes can be sufficient. However, in a large aquarium, even with a protein skimmer, success is not always guaranteed; the skimmer must not only be present but also powerful. The skimmer performs the function of chemical filtration, removing a large portion of organic compounds from the water, thereby improving water quality.

Thomas

To be fair, cleaning the water with a sponge is a physical process rather than a chemical one, but everything else is correct - it can be done without it, but it's better not to.

It seems that there has been a misunderstanding. It's unclear why they classified foam fractionation as chemical filtration... It also seems to me that this is purely physics! Undissolved organic matter "sticks" to the surface of the air bubble. Where is the chemistry here?

As far as I remember, foam separators are also called floaters. So, the flotation process relates to the field of physical chemistry.

What is there to argue about? Yes, these are floaters (from the English "float"), they are also skimmers (from the English "skimmer"), and in Russian, they are called "pennik," "penootdelitel," and even "otpenivatel" can be found. But the essence is the same - water purification. It works by attracting organic (and even inorganic) substances to the interface of water and gas. This is how surfactants are attracted. Among them are the unwanted proteins, amino acids, fats... I think the principle on which this device operates can be described as more physical than chemical.

Can a carbon filter type replace a foam filter, or not?

John828

No, it can't! Without a foam cap - no way!!!

You need to be very careful with coal, and there is never enough foam separation column. The only issue is its power, and many are trying to solve this problem. I think it's impossible without a flotator.
