• Tropical crab in the Black Sea? Experts, clarify!

  • Noah1632

I'm not an expert, but maybe they "infested" the ships like whelks?

Joyce

Great, I hope they reproduce quickly, we'll catch and cook them. We've definitely never had any like this before.

Matthew

Soon we will be going to Crimea for corals.

I'm not an expert on Black Sea fauna in general and on catfish in particular, but it seems to me that I've seen such ones in the Caucasus. I could be mistaken.

Mary

Moved in... A natural process.

Eric5208

It wouldn't be bad to let her go...

Mariah

In general, there are many varieties of Macropipus... I think it's more likely a hybrid. Although maybe someone has released it!?

Stacy6866

They will go on vacation this weekend, don't worry!

Christopher8654

All Black Sea species are in the Red Book. This means we go to the Red Book website, and as always, something is off, like they forgot to mention the size and that's it.))) But here I found a very suitable Eriphia verrucosa up to 10 cm.

Gregory

Have you ever seen a stone crab??? It's also called red, red one, red crab.... What does it have to do with it!!!??? This is a typical Macropipus, they have a pair of swimming legs..., but Eriphia does not!

Charles894

Macropiuses, as I understand, are quite small in the Black Sea. If it's not Eriphia verrucosa, then it must be some other local species. I remember that there were often stories about catching them the size of a palm, even in the vicinity of the estuary. Why assume it's a hybrid or something that was released? And there's no point in releasing it now; it will die if it hasn't already, and the only thing left to do is eat it. P.S. This is a commercial species! Moreover, it should be eaten)))

Keith7534

That's him! I admit, I didn't know we had them...

Ashley5975

It seems that it was initially encountered only in the Bosporus region. Adaptation is happening slowly but surely and inevitably.

Curtis9143

Handsome! Now there will be a goal at sea...

Meghan

That's it! Exactly! I saw quite a few of them around Pitsunda in 1981-1982. Tourists even used makeshift fishing methods to catch them back then.

Kevin262

Why would it die? It just sat a bit in the Black Sea aquarium, ate some shrimp, and then went home! Why should it die?!!

Jasmine

Transportation... Even if our freshwater species are transported for more than an hour or two, many die on the way. Why move them back and forth, especially since they are not a valuable species? Let them live in an aquarium if there is enough space or... Well, that's my opinion.

Aaron

I don't think we have any left! It seems too big for the aquarium... Although...

Antonio

So we have nothing left... this is an introduced, trivial commercial species, as I understand it. It is not "local" at all, and catching one won't change anything; it's all nonsense. As a good biologist once said, I don't remember who - we need to protect habitats and the environment first and foremost, while individual catches are just minor details. There have been many discussions on this topic regarding entomology...

Tracey

I completely agree on the matter of habitat protection.
