• Question about the flotation unit (foam separator)

  • Andrea

Dear Sirs, I have a functioning 500-liter freshwater aquarium. A year ago, I considered converting it to a marine setup. The issue is that the height of my stand is about 50 cm, and there is no space for a sump. As far as I understand, a sump is a container where the protein skimmer is placed. I have all the other equipment. So the question is: 1. Are there protein skimmers that can be installed in a stand without a sump?

As far as I know, no. There are hang-on skimmers that are installed at the back (side) of the aquarium.

TUNZE has skimmers that can be installed directly in the aquarium, in which case a sump is simply not needed. There are also skimmers that hang outside the aquarium, but there is a drawback: the skimmer is quite a noisy device. I had an external one, and because of the noise, I moved it inside the aquarium. However, in my opinion, if you are setting up a marine aquarium, it is better to make a new stand with consideration for a skimmer column.
