As far as I know, there should be no nitrates in a marine aquarium. And a sponge does not provide that.

As far as I know, the infamous wet drive filter is also effective only against nitrates.

Nitrates like nitrogen need anaerobic bacteria, that is, bacteria that do not require oxygen. They are the ones that decompose nitrates.

The same principles apply in a marine aquarium as in a freshwater one, but the approaches are different. I do not recommend using silicate construction sand, although it is possible. There will be an increased silicate content in the water, which will lead to a rapid growth of diatoms.

Sponges can only be used if you wash them every day. When organizing filtration in a marine aquarium, you can do without any sponges, synthetic fibers, etc.
