I think so, and in a good way. I don't know of any other successful aquariums, even of mediocre quality, that use just tap water, well water, or water from a borehole.

Stephen5857

The distillate will probably be quite expensive; there are likely places in Novosibirsk where you can get osmotic water with TDS up to 10-12.

Chad4168

Well, that's clear - I wasn't asking about the price. Considering the cost of filling the sea, the question of water doesn't really matter - it's an expensive pleasure... The question wasn't about being economical or wanting to save money, but whether distilled water is an option... judging by the answers, it is, but it's expensive. As for reverse osmosis for dispensing, I'm reading a discussion on another site about the quality of water from osmosis and I understand that it's not so simple with the membrane and the nitrates it allows through - so the idea of dispensing is somewhat concerning... because the quality of that water might not be very good.

Emily3144

If it's a normal spill point, then everything is fine. When I'm busy and don't have time to filter for a couple of hours, I take two regular 20-liter bottles and a TDS meter, usually measuring around 5-9. The water is ozonated, and I pour it into the auto top-up. For short-term storage, I bought a 50-liter food-grade barrel, and the water can stay there for up to a week, and I use it for water changes. Additionally, using distillate does not guarantee protection from various unpleasant issues in the aquarium; as soon as the packaging is opened, the water starts to become saturated from the outside with various contaminants, bacteria, viruses, etc.

Janet5447

If the question is not an issue, then buy a system (osmosis) and you won't have to think every time about where to get water, and the aquarium will be more stable.

Denise

I have already solved the issue with osmosis - the problem was with the drainage - if someone lives in their own house, they know that a septic tank will fill up at this rate in a day - and calling a truck every day indicates not the caller's wealth, but rather a lack of common sense. So when the bright idea of discharging water came to me last night, my husband was faced with the fact that we needed to figure out how to discharge water not into the septic tank... well, the rest is clear, now I'm a bit more concerned about the nitrates, which, it turns out, osmosis is not in a hurry to remove...

Laura3615

It is clear, and is the already salted water stored, do you mix and aerate it during storage?

Caroline1599

When salted, as well as osmotically treated, it does not mix or aerate since the storage period is not long. P.S. Regarding the drainage, I have acquaintances at their dacha who set up a separate container and use the wastewater for technical needs.

Thomas1044

I see, thank you, the capacity is clear - the same barrels can be filled in the summer for watering, in the winter I will fill the barrel at home - I think there is a 1 to 5 ratio for the discharge, and for a hundred liters of water, I understand that I need to do a replacement of about 20 liters once a week, so the discharge will be 100 liters - I will distribute a hundred liters over the week... in general, I am very pleased with the solution to the problem, now I am loading about the quality of the osmosis...

Melissa2062

Was that a stone thrown in my garden?

Yolanda

Who said that? Silicates seem to pass through, but for this, a third stage of purification is used - a combined resin. The output is 000 on a stationary TDS meter. This means that there is nothing in the water at all, except for water.

Catherine

I wonder what the time frame is for the water from the refill container to be used up?

Brenda

No, I wasn't thinking about you at all; that was a response to the words from someone who suggested that I wanted to pour tap water into the sea... By the way, I included a quote there, so why did you think it was about you???

Alexandra

Hello, my advice to you: 1. Make sure to control the water and don't spare money on filters. 2. Tests are not mandatory, but you can do without them (just make sure to do them later). 3. Don't rush to populate the aquarium. 4. Start slowly. 5. Once again, take your time, check everything with tests, and then populate. 6. Good luck!

Andrew9246

1 sea is separated from Freshwater (this is not negotiable) 2 take the penny at once and it's normal 3 salt only Tropic Marin 4 light 6 t5 +1 mg

Julie

exotic, and what volume do you plan?

Jesse3979

I mean to buy a regular aquarium - not designed for the sea - and fill it with sea substrate... or do marine aquariums require special treatment???

Scott8536

I planned for 100 liters - give or take - so the Aquael ReefMAX, which is 105 liters, suited me. However, since everything there generally needs to be replaced and even the background peels off over time, I'm no longer inclined towards this model. I don't see any other options in our city... so I thought about converting a regular aquarium, but only in the way it is done in Aquael with a sump.

Tami

exotic, Boyu TL 550 is perfect for the first sea!

Daniel9952

If it's not too much trouble, could you "dumb it down" for me? I'm not really grasping the meaning in the professional conversation yet. I've skimmed through and read that LED lights and special lamps of different colors are needed...

Christopher4125

I haven't seen such an aquarium for sale in our city.

Charles

T5 is fluorescent lamps. MH is metal halide lamp. But for your 100 liters, 6 T5 + 1 MH seems a bit much. What do you plan to keep?

Jonathon8514

Exotic, order a 400-liter aquarium plus a 150-liter sump, a stand, and start calculating the system specifically, as it's difficult to guess what kind of light or skimmer and other equipment you need. The volumes I mentioned above won't take up much space, but you'll ensure a properly organized marine aquarium. If the sea is your dream, then don't confine it to 100 liters.

Richard2180

I have this thought - but for now, there is space for a hundred-liter tank, then I need to understand what is mine and what is not - it's all not simple, if it works out - it will be luck and intuition in this matter - then I will raise the issue of a larger aquarium - but that's not soon, in general, my husband barely agreed to such a volume, and financially, I personally can't handle a larger volume for now, but in general, I am a maximalist and if it works out, just hold me...

Troy8808

What does everyone think about this video?

Erin

Exotic, read a little bit of these three links, and many of your questions will immediately disappear, while others that are closer to the reality of creating a marine aquarium will arise. So there won't be questions like, "Should I siphon the substrate?" In the sea, we are eternal students. The more we learn, the more questions we have. Even in these links, there are many things that marine aquarium enthusiasts disagree with, but 90% of the necessary information for a new sailor is there.

Tammy2040

Ha ha, I guess it's time to laugh here, right? I actually meant to ask why it's done without gloves or if that's acceptable? I naively assume that all of this should be done while wearing gloves, probably very naively - if you find it so funny? Well, if it's that funny, maybe you shouldn't read beginner topics and grace them with your subtle humor?

Caitlin3279

exotic, well, you’ve probably been to the sea, and you’ve touched the stones and sand too. Nothing deadly. There are gloves for marine aquariums, but that’s more for poisonous species of animals, and you can just use your hands for the sand and stones at the start. There’s a book online by authors Ov and Savchuk called "Reef Aquarium." Everything is laid out clearly. Read it, most of your questions will be answered. I’m a beginner myself...

Laurie3842

Thank you, I will read it. Actually, I understand perfectly well that it's funny and irritating for someone "in the know" to read questions from newcomers, but not everyone becomes or is born "in the know" right away. If someone's annoyed by the "stupidity" of a beginner, they can simply avoid their topics and not showcase their "subtle" humor. I am an expert in breeding parrots, and there are few professionals in the parrot world—probably just like with "sailors." However, I don't boast about my knowledge with newcomers, nor do I mock their lack of knowledge—this is probably a matter of upbringing.

Jessica5348

this is only your conclusion.

David

You know, I had this thought about gloves in terms of water cleanliness - if we are so concerned about the purity of water, then probably our hands can introduce all sorts of dirt - well, that's just my layman's feeling - so to speak, a myth, and you have dispelled it - that's already better, thank you, I will read, I am reading, there's still time - right now I'm more concerned about the equipment for the aquarium and choosing a model - we will go for the third one - let's try to put something in order ... to understand what is available in our city, and the question about gloves and the like just came up along the way ...

Brooke

Don't take offense, no one is laughing at you; we were all like that to some extent. I still take notes, and the kids tease me about it. They say, "Do you really need this?" (like, haven't you learned enough in your lifetime?), and there are many questions that can stump me too. So no one will offend you. Well, it's a fact that we have to read a lot, and besides all this, we also need communication among sailors, preferably in person.

Kristin

Thank you for the links, I'll go read them. Everything is already set up at home, I'm at the computer - reading - reading - I don't want to embarrass myself at the meeting, and I need to have a foundation, otherwise they'll sell me something I don't need...

To begin with, one must make a pilgrimage to the real sea. To see how these fish, corals, and all of this should touch the strings of the soul at once. Only then should one start to create the sea in its living image and likeness; otherwise, it will not be the sea, but a copy of someone else's aquarium.

Carrie1606

Here I disagree with you; the sea itself won't allow for copies because the wildlife and vegetation are unique in their own way.

Jason

Regarding gloves, I would advise wearing them, not for fun, but for your own safety. From my personal experience, I have encountered either the effects of seawater or toxins from invertebrates, resulting in peeling skin on my hands and a rash on the arm I used to reach into the aquarium, all the way up to my shoulder. This experience is not just mine, but shared by many on this forum.

Jennifer5371

You may be right that one needs to experience and immerse themselves, but for me, for example, I don't have that opportunity, and it's not just a matter of finances, although that plays a role too. I will do my part to create my little drop in the ocean so that I can admire the sea every day, even though I can't go there. But as soon as the kids grow up and work takes care of itself, I will go and compare my puddle with the real sea, and then I will draw my conclusions.

Dennis

Thank you, I no longer feel like such a fool, although I was more concerned about the gloves in terms of safety for marine life and water quality...

Laura3615

Regarding hand climbing in the aquarium -

Marie5348

Guys, Happy New Year! Please advise on the osmosis system; as I understand it, the cartridge arrangement should be as follows - #1-5 micron, #2-carbon, #3-1 micron, #4-pump, #5-membrane - but where should the cartridge with ion exchange resin be placed? I read that it's recommended to do osmosis without a storage tank; what's the best way to do it - how does everyone else do it? Regarding the main requirements, it's preferable to use a US membrane, am I correct? I would be very grateful if you could share your experience. Mistreated, the main thing that became clear is that using bare hands in the aquarium is generally not dangerous for the inhabitants, and one can think about themselves in advance when buying pets.

Jason9952

juwel Vision 180, as far as I understand, is not a marine aquarium. Is there really no one in your city who makes aquariums? You can read about it here - By the way, the topic is active at the link. You can register on that site and communicate directly with the aquarium owner, ask for advice and opinions.

Jeanne

Mistreated, what difference does it make whether the aquarium is made for freshwater or saltwater??? Glass is glass, even in Africa, right? You can still gather it at night - the question is HOW to fit everything functionally and beautifully, with minimal damage to the lid.

Charles

Friends, who can help with advice about lighting? I want a pendant light with LEDs and other features. I've read various discussions and schemes on this topic, and my head is spinning. Maybe someone can explain in simple terms what kind of bulbs I need to buy and in which box to install them? The aquarium is 180 - 200 liters...

Ronald5720

For the planned volume, 4 T5 lamps of 54W will be sufficient; lighting is a serious matter, and if you lack the skills to make them, it's better to buy ready-made ones, for example, Sun Power 4x54W, or similar. However, keep in mind that you will need to replace the lamps every year. Consider LED lighting; it's initially expensive, but it pays off later. At night, I recommend reading A. Savchuk's "Reef Aquarium." You can easily find it online.

Ryan

I'm reading about ice and I really want to, but my head has already swollen up, and I have no skills at all... I'm reading here.

Mitchell7972

Order a ready-made assembly with a controller; you need to have certain knowledge, and you are unlikely to manage it on your own.

Maria6659

if there were a place to order ...

Michael826

Novosibirsk is one big academic city, are there really no masters??? Ask around, at the Riff Center! Finally, order from us if you look for it, everything will come together. Offtopic

Andrew9581

Thank you very much for not abandoning me. How do I place an order? Please advise on the dimensions: if I order an aquarium 90 by 50 by 50 (and if I make the width 60 cm, will that be okay? Am I reading the volume correctly - it will be 270 liters then?) - is that normal - is the width not too big? I want to make the most of the space for the aquarium - I only have a length limitation; I probably shouldn't make the height any taller?

Jill1815

There is no such thing as a wide width; with a wide bottom, it's easier to create compositions, and there will be space for the fish to swim around. Seriously, it will be fine. I would make the height 60 cm for visibility. Write to me in private messages to discuss the reality of shipping; maybe with transfers, someone can pass it to Moscow, and from there, Novosibirsk is nearby.

Brooke

I wrote in a private message, thinking maybe through a transport company - the question is in what condition it will arrive to me, then I will settle on an aquarium 90 by 60 by 60, I was afraid of the height - I thought that light wouldn't reach the bottom... or with a LED light, am I safe from this? According to my calculations, I have 324 liters? (Oh man, I decided to go for it - I'm scared myself)

Catherine6534

With the correct calculation, there is no risk, and it will need to be muted as well. If packed well, it will arrive like new; there is not much that can break. The volume will be normal, you won't regret it.

John3142

If you do not understand the difference, then it is still too early for you to start a marine aquarium. First, you need to equip yourself with theory. You can buy a ready-made marine aquarium with a built-in sump. (Technical section)

Joseph9203

Mistreated, I beg you, please don't throw around words - if so, many people modify freshwater aquariums and even ready-made ones for the sea too - the problem lies in the lighting, the skimmer, and so on; the glass and the adhesive are the same - only the equipment is different. I know what a sump is - no need to explain it to me. I would gladly buy a ready-made one with a great skimmer and proper lighting - but such things don't exist in nature.

Robert800

I will be gluing the aquarium, I found a place, they suggest making a double bottom - is it worth it? The load will be significant...

Scott9892

I have a solid bottom and no problems. Usually, the bottom is made composite for larger sizes.

Amber6362

Well, finally we've reached the best option: it's better to assemble a decent and proper aquarium ourselves once than to buy one wholesale and then rack our brains about what to do with it. I already have bitter experience with Juwel, and redoing it will cost more.

Joseph1346

exotic, look for specialists who understand gluing M.A. (marine aquarium), as there are many things to consider - the shaft, drain holes, return, and an emergency system if desired. Again, the sump needs to be calculated. It is preferable to glue and assemble everything in one place. That is, what I mean is that at the first stage, a complex can be made - aquarium, stand, sump. Everything should fit together so that later on, there is no need to drill and glue randomly on site.

Robin

I wouldn't be so categorical! (Just to broaden the horizons) The solutions are quite worthy; I sometimes enjoy looking at them with the aim of "stealing something and using it for myself," and the design is top-notch... But of course, there's no talk of budget anymore! And there's no need to look for a "magic pill" in any brand – everyone has their own recipe.

Cheryl

, the ray is considered for these eloses, as they are all being redone.

Jacqueline6670

He definitely wants to push it hard. No canister filters. Still, it might be worth reading the maritime alphabet one more time. Otherwise, you'll end up making a mess. Take a look here:

Kyle

Run far away from him, he doesn't understand filters. All Eheim tanks are made from solid drawn glass on injection molding machines. So, we've convinced you about the aquarium, now let's address the sump issue. There are no serious aquariums with external filters; you'll pour money into it, and then you'll be disappointed. So let's avoid "maybe." Besides, making a sump will probably be cheaper than buying the same Eheim, and the old models, despite their reliability, also tend to hum. You can place a refugium in the sump, you can keep anything there, and the biofiltration will be reliable.

Rebecca1419

Damn, I would gladly make them myself - it's just that no one does them here, the one you're talking about is a run away - we have the most "advanced" one, that's the problem...

Jonathon8514

Thank you - boom, think further... it seems the light has been resolved - I will order from Rey, now I need to decide further - the question is whether to include the sample or not...

Kenneth2761

They probably searched poorly; since they are making aquariums, they should also be able to make sumps. Essentially, it's the same as an aquarium, but with partitions. Provide the dimensions and set the task; the working design can be from Maks, it's not a big deal.

Michele

Yes, I already started reading the topic about Maks. I need to understand how these three sections in the aquarium are connected - in the sense that there are some overflow holes somewhere. Of course, one can set the task of making an aquarium with partitions - the main thing is to formulate this task correctly... for that, I need to understand it myself...

Christopher4108

On the contrary, I strongly recommend starting with "Ma-ma we-la ra-mu." Good luck! P.S. You will receive a thousand tips. How to choose the right one if you don't understand the essence? And if you understand the essence, you don't need tips... There has always been one piece of advice - choose a successful aquarium that has been around for at least a couple of years and make an exact one-to-one copy. Learn from others' experiences, and only then!

Joseph

Perhaps it is YOU who do not understand, I visited the "most successful" today, looked around, I will have to copy the equipment from the internet, the closest is project A, I hope he won't mind my questions about his system.

Susan9583

Here are a couple of links to ready-made systems with drawings (attachment files):

Zachary

Thank you, the process is underway - I ordered the aquarium, but I can't find a master for the stand... for now, time is on my side... the launch is only in the summer.
