• Exceeding the dosage of Seachem Purigen

  • Tanner

Hello, dear marine enthusiasts! A question has arisen about exceeding the dosage of Seachem Purigen! The situation is as follows: I am setting up a nano reef. The aquarium is 20 liters with an external filter. I filled the filter with ceramic media (live rocks), but I would like to add some Seachem Purigen as well. However, since the filter has a large basket area for media, a small dose of Seachem Purigen (according to the instructions) would only cover 10-15% in a thin layer. Is it possible to add, for example, 100g of Purigen to such a system? Thank you! P.S. Or what else would you recommend putting in the filter?

Honestly and without offense, put whatever you want, there will be no joy anyway.

The charm of nano aquariums lies in their simplicity; there's no need to complicate the system. All you need for a 20-liter aquarium is light, flow, and an auto top-off (ideally), and to maintain it with 2 liters of water changes per week using good salt. An external filter, especially a canister one, is completely contraindicated. A hang-on filter can be used, but it should be empty to hide the heater and oxygenate the water. A protein skimmer (live rocks) is also unnecessary if there is enough rock in the display. Besides collecting debris, it won't really help the nano aquarium in any significant way.

It is written on all forums that purigen takes away trace elements significantly... It's hard to check, none of this is tested...

I do not recommend exceeding the dose. Once, I also exceeded the dose and my fish died.
