• Breeding of monodactyls. Failure.

So the initial data: a Resan aquarium, water from the Black Sea, three monos - one male and two females. When changing the water, the male turns coal-black and starts chasing the females. It all ends with one of them spawning, after which the fish eagerly eat the eggs. I catch the eggs simply by filling a three-liter bottle with water. The next day, there are already several dozen larvae swimming, very small, resembling commas. After two days, the larvae become more transparent and take on the appearance of fry swimming in the water column. I have tried different types of food: from plankton caught in the sea by hand to purchased fry food. The fry eat the food, but by the 6th to 8th day, all of them die. Over six months, I have tried to raise fry five times. The fish spawn approximately every two weeks. I took photos, I will post them, although they turned out extremely poorly. It is possible that the cause of the fry's death is that the food is not suitable. Any ideas? I will consider any suggestions. Do not suggest artemia. The fry are much smaller than artemia.

It is easy to distinguish females from males: aside from color, females have a slightly indented spot on their side below the fin. Males do not have this.

For such a number and size of fish, the aquarium needs to be three times larger; otherwise, it is too cramped for them.

All the fish were taken as fry: monodactyls the size of a five-kopeck coin, and selenotocas even smaller. They grew up in this aquarium. The mullet is a grown live feed. I constantly feed the selenotocas and monodactyls with mullet fry. A few mullet fry survived (they hid well) and grew up. The mollies also partially survived, they breed uncontrollably, but only the fry with protective coloring survive. They have grown up. Yes, of course, it's cramped. They will move to a larger tank after some time. But for now, it's just a plan, we still have to wait about 6 months.

Considering their natural habitat, it may be a matter of water chemistry...

Desalting? Adding salt?

Actually, I will try both ways. I will also give caviar to an employee of AzCherNIRo, I have already agreed on this in advance.

So, how are the successes in breeding monodactyls?

Judy

So did the little one swim? In saltwater or freshwater? Thanks in advance for the info.

The fry swam in the sea water. The water was taken from the Kerch Strait. The breeding will be considered successful after obtaining offspring from the second to third generation. In fact, I did not grow adult fish from the fry.

Crimea-2015, electric blockade, dead fish. Goodbye, friend.

Robert

I sincerely sympathize with your loss.

Susan

Well, what can I say, it's very unfortunate. I hope everything works out.
