I bought a few LEDs on sale... 2 at 20W, cool white - LED Emitter: 20W - Output Lumens: 1600 Lumens - DC Forward Voltage (VF): 15-17Vdc - DC Forward Current (IF): 1300mA - Color Temp: 5500~6000K (Cold White) - Beam Angle: 140 degrees - Lifespan: > 50,000 hours, and one at 30W, warm white. - LED Emitter: 30W - Output Lumens: 2600-2800 Lumens - DC Forward Voltage (VF): 30-35Vdc - DC Forward Current (IF): 1000mA - Color Temp: 2850~3000K (Warm White) - Beam Angle: 120 degrees - Lifespan: > 50,000 hours, photo attached. What do you think - should I buy lenses and reflectors for them, or just make my own reflector? What ballasts do you recommend? For an algae tank, is it better to use warm or cool light, and how many lumens?

I would use a warm LED. It seems that lenses come with the LED. It would be more logical to calculate the area of the algae tank and the height of the LED placement, and then we can determine the required lens.

You can play with the height, there is room for it. There are no lenses for it yet, and on the cardboard they are more expensive than the diode itself for some reason. Judging by the experience of building, people have managed just fine with a reflector made of aluminum. Is 30W, 2600Lm not too much?

Then I'm out here - it's just that I understand the "logic" of working with LEDs a bit differently. As I see it, the reflector won't make a difference... You're not making a flashlight... from toy 0.05W LEDs. I would adjust the lens so it doesn't spill light unnecessarily on the foam or other adjacent compartments and shines more on the grass instead of lighting up the stand. I'm sure that's not the case. People are using 70-250W MH...

We need to check how many milliwatts give in lumens. With the lenses, it's clear; we'll look into possible options and a calculator. Maybe there's a diagram somewhere on how to calculate? Honestly, I'm not good with optics. Here's what I found about the lenses.

I'll try to calculate, I found some lenses with a holder. It's time - they are more expensive than the LED. 250W for the sump seems a bit much, usually 70-150 is used, although some are satisfied with CFLs and just fluorescent lamps.
