• "overhead samp" for mini sea

  • Tracy

Good afternoon. I am seeking help in creating a mini sump similar to a hang-on filter. The idea to create such a sump arose from the lack of relatively inexpensive and, at the same time, silent hang-on skimmers. I couldn't find anything decent except for the Deltec 300. As a result, I came up with the idea to make one. Does this idea have a chance of success? I have roughly sketched a variant, and the dimensions are not final: I plan to place a sump behind the aquarium, which is 60 cm long and 27 cm high. The water intake into the sump is planned to be from the far right compartment in the drawing (the 8 cm one), with the drain flowing by gravity from the left compartment. My question is this: as I understand it, the water level fluctuation will occur in the compartment with the drain? It is unclear what height the drain should be, and should the last partition before the drain compartment be an overflow from the top or the bottom? I understand that this option is not ideal, but is there still a chance for it to work? I don't suffer from masochism—if the idea is doomed, I will abandon it. I just wanted to place the equipment and skimmer without cluttering the aquarium, which is already small. I would appreciate any advice, suggestions, and criticism, preferably without rotten eggs and tomatoes.

Make the drain from the sump at the smallest angle - bubbles may fly into the aquarium. The water level will fluctuate in the tank. I would remove the last partition before the drain altogether.

Why such a drain compartment? It takes up so much space. Wouldn't it be easier with just a hole and a Durso and a pocket?

The aquarium is already set up, and I'm scared to drill into a running aquarium, so I wanted to get a bit creative, but it seems to me that the idea is not viable. I'm curious if the pump will continue to pump water into the sump during a power surge. And the compartment is only large in the drawing compared to the others (I just drew it disproportionately).

You need to drill in the sample, I made something almost the same, just on the side. The simplest and most reliable solution is to glue a new jar with compartments, like in a battle, resan, and sleep peacefully.

Recently, in the Sale, Popsuy provided a list of skimmers, among them was one like the one in the photo. It's not expensive and is hang-on, but I can't say anything about its noise level. If you're interested, just Google it. The name of the skimmer is in the photo caption. I found it - WEIPRO SA-2014 (hang-on protein skimmer) Price: 288.

I found its dimensions to be 13*16.5*84 cm - very tall. My aquarium is only 27 cm. Can someone advise on the construction scheme? Is it okay that the water intake is done by a pump, while the drainage into the aquarium is by gravity?

It's fine, just think carefully about the drain so that in case of anything, the pump doesn't empty the entire aquarium. In the case of a non-standard setup, water from the sump is placed in the aquarium, but in your case, aquarium water is unlikely to fit in the sump. The drain should be placed directly into the aquarium, otherwise, the bubbles will be annoying. P.S. Also, simultaneously create a proper system with adequate volume and equipment and move.

The drain, as I understand it, is just a waterfall (in the form of a trough)? You don't need to calculate anything there, just make sure it doesn't get clogged. Set the drain level a couple of centimeters below the last partition. If the pump inlet is sealed, when you turn the electricity off and on, the pump should start without any problems. The water level in the aquarium will change (due to evaporation), while it will remain constant in the sump. In the marked areas, make the partitions not all the way to the top.

Thank you. It was unclear about the water level. Now we just need to determine the size of the compartment for the foam. Will 11x12 cm be enough for any small internal one?

It is advisable to decide on the model here and clarify the dimensions, so that later you won't regret that the compartment is too small or too large.

Thank you, I will take care of this during the holidays. It's almost my volume. There is a question about the fan - what good one can I put here in 11x12 cm? The priority is quiet operation. Can I find a good model in the range of 500-600?
