Oh, thank you! I basically suspected that we are compensating for all of this with new technologies (like traffic police compensating for the lack of horses with flashing lights). Pennik, stones, samp, denitrates, coal, etc. all of this is available.

I have another question! I have 1-2mm sand in my aquarium, and in the algae scrubber, there is 0.1-1mm sand. Should I add finer sand to the aquarium for a larger population of living organisms in it?

There are also other, more precise books in Russian: "Wastewater Treatment," Lapitskaya; "Aerobic Stabilization of Sludge," Abramov, 1976; "Wastewater Treatment in Industry," Proskuryakov. For people who are more interested in the topic than just figuring it out with vague words, it is very useful to read.
