• Advice on live rocks for aquariums

  • Eric5208

Hello! The situation is as follows: I ordered live rocks from someone, and they took more than a day to arrive. This Friday, the rocks came, and I soaked them for about an hour in a bucket of salty osmotic water, cleaned what I could, and then tossed them into the sump and started the skimmer to remove all the dead organic matter. The skimmer from the live rocks released some gas into the air, and I started sneezing, coughing, my eyes watered, etc. The sump with the live rocks was sent to the balcony and continued to run, with the door tightly closed. At night, my temperature rose to 39.6, and we couldn't bring it down until three in the morning. Yesterday, my health condition was normal, and I moved the sump back into the cabinet. Now there is a distinct swampy smell in the room, and the temperature has risen again to 38.3. Honestly, I don't know what to do. I need help!

Hello, please read the topic, it seems to be your case.

the metallic taste was (maybe it is)

It, it... work with gloves, the pen is not the issue, all symptoms are a result of contact with stones, possibly with remains of animals that released toxins.

I didn't find anything about the toxin entering the body through the air. Is that possible?

Keep the stones in the samp on the balcony for a week or two until the smell completely goes away, do not touch the stone or water with bare hands, you might take an allergy pill (it helps me).

There was a case when someone was scalded with boiling water and got poisoned by inhaling the steam. Drink Enterosgel to cleanse the body. Usually, the symptoms disappear within 2 days.

On Thursday, I spent half the day with the tank and was actually next to the samp and the live rocks. I didn't touch the rocks or the water. In the evening, the temperature was close to forty and that was it. No cough, no runny nose, no chest pain, nothing. I took some powders and pills - the next morning my temperature was 36.6. In the end, I have a bucket with rocks and a sponge on the balcony, I go in wearing a gauze mask, cleaning the sponge with rubber gloves. No symptoms at all.

It's sad that your body reacts this way to the sea, but what about the corals that will need to be touched, cut, and glued...

I really hope that this is still related to the long relocation of these stones and that the filter will eventually clear out all the nastiness. If not, then it will be a fish aquarium with a minimum of simple corals that won't try to kill me.
