• Marine aquarium. The beginning...

Good day to everyone! In this topic, I will gradually describe my steps in building a M.A. (marine aquarium), or to be more precise - the conversion of an aquarium and cabinet from freshwater to marine. So, as of today, we have the following: 1. An aquarium of 100x50x60cm (actual water column height 50-55cm) with an equipment compartment (see photo). 2. A cabinet of 100x50x90cm (all walls and countertop made of double chipboard 32mm, base 16mm). Aquarium with cabinet Photo of the compartment and top of the aquarium Compartment, top view Now the plans are: 1. Installing the cabinet on adjustable legs (6 pieces should be sufficient). 2. Removing the central partition from the cabinet and reinforcing the cabinet with a wooden frame (reinforcing the central part, especially the point where the doors meet). 3. In the existing compartment, drill 2 holes at the top for the the top for the drain and emergency system, and glue a Durso pocket. 4. Glue a sump, dimensions 80x40x40. Regarding the partition, I'm still studying sump designs in forum reports. 5. Install the plumbing (drain, return, emergency). Please advise where in Kyiv I can buy the components for the drain and return! That's all for now. Let's do this, and then move on. If anyone has their own vision for solving the above goals or useful advice

Heather

Somewhere it was written that in Epicenter, in the department where pipes and fittings are sold.

As far as I read in another topic, is there a hole at the bottom of the shaft? Or should we glue that piece in there, put a patch on top the size of the shaft, and drill the bottom? Otherwise, the shaft glass is short (below the edges of the aquarium) - we need to increase the height just in case. Nobody in the epicenter, aquamedic at a.

Okay, thanks, I'll check it out at Epicenter tomorrow.

Which pump will be quieter?

Darrell5975

Viaaqua is a fairly quiet pump, as far as I remember it has a ceramic shaft. Eheim is good, small in size, quiet, but expensive.

The viaaqua 1800 is quite quiet for me. Why do you ask? In the room where the system will be located, will someone be sleeping? The drain is 1 inch, the return and emergency are 3/4 inch, and the water drain will be regulated with a tap. Usually, the cladding is made for the frame, not the frame for the cabinet. I mentioned that everything needs to be calculated precisely; if there is an error in the calculations, something might not fit or there could be a gap. I also made it under a chipboard cabinet, but I also covered it (glued the countertops to the aquarium and the sump, no desire to do it), probably in the spring.

Theoretically, someone might sleep. In this room, there is already a 450-liter cichlid tank, and a Fluval FX5 is working. It is quite quiet right now. I wouldn't want a strong background noise from the aquarium in the room.

The drain is 1 inch for the return and 3/4 inch for the emergency, the water drain will be regulated by a valve. Are the specified pipe sizes external or internal?

Stephen5857

Drain, fitting inside 33mm. Pipe 32mm outer. You can install the necessary section of pipe into the fitting, and on this section, you can install a valve; you can also add a hose of this type of connection (if, of course, you want to be able to move the hose aside). In the photo, there is a hose for M.A. (marine aquarium), but you can also use a regular hose from the market and secure it with a clamp. Return 20mm food-grade PVC pipe.

A Giesemann Reflex HQ 1*250 W light fixture has been purchased (+ additionally, 2 reflectors with 2 x 24 W lamps have been installed). Could you please advise on the best height to place it above the water level?

Cindy

There is also a question regarding the dimensions of the SAM: 70x40x45 cm (height) - will it be sufficient? Is the height not too large?

Kimberly

It's better to have a reserve in volume than to have this volume on the floor.

Loretta5483

Start the height search at 30 cm from the water level. After that, everything depends on the reflector of the lamp. Look at the light spot from the lamp. For a pendant lamp, quickly set the required height for your aquarium.

An aquarium measuring 80x35x45 cm has been purchased for the SAMP. Now we just need to figure out the compartments and the height of the divider and glue them in.

I also decided to cut the shaft for the equipment, seal the bottom, and make the shaft with a rectangular cross-section of 17x18 cm. As the work progresses, I will post photos.
